Setting up a Blue Snowball microphone

I have a Blue Snowball on the way to my house. I was wondering which of the three switches I should set the mic to (there are different modes, but simply labeled as 1 2 3). I will be in a room with quite a bit of background noise, a television and a fan are my main concerns. So I won't be in a quiet room or anything like that. I will be using this mic for simple voice communication such as skype.

A concern I have is the placement of the mic, I sit at my desk with the keyboard close to the edge and won't have room to place the mic and stand directly in front of my mouth (and in front of the keyboard) nor would I want it to impede my typing which I believe it certainly would if it were sitting b/t myself and the keys. So I will be placing the Snowball at an angle and to my left most likely about 18 inches away. Would this be acceptable? Would I need to use a different mic setting?

Also, is anyone familiar with 3rd party software to make keybinding that could mute the mic? I'm shocked that it has no mute at this pricepoint but hey..

You don't really want a condenser microphone in a loud room, you really want a noise cancelling microphone for the situation you're describing. Take it back and get a noise cancelling headphone or whoever you're talking to will want to murder you.

What do you mean noise cancelling headphone? Getting a whole new headset isn't an option I currently use a very nice pair (IMO) of BOSE QC125s that I want to continue using so I need a standalone mic.

So you are saying the Blue Snowball won't work for my needs? I feel like a lot of "gamers" would use it as it has overwhelmingly positive reviews at its price point especially for whats its going to be used for. As in, nothing "professional" just simple voice communication. I got a barely used snowball, black, with original packaging etc. for $20 shipped. If it absolutely doesn't work for what I want I guess I could sell it on eBay.

The Blue Snowball is a great mic, but it's a condenser mic. It's a totally different technology that's designed to take in a wide range of sound. Therefore everyone you talk to is going to hear all your background noises. The problem is not the mic, just your requirement that it not pick up all your various background noise.
