The cpu that I'm getting is the i5 6600k but the specs says it's memory type is ddr4 and ddr3l. Can I use any ddr3 ram or is this not anything related to "memory type"?

Solution
no you cant just use any ddr3
first of, yes CPU itself, supports both ddr4 ram and ddr3L ram, please note the L, because this is low voltage ram, the ddr3l ram the CPU support supports is a very specific type of ddr3 ram

also, weather or not you can even use the ddr3l ram depends entirely on your motherboard, since most motherboards supporting the cpu will only support ddr4 ram, and say specifically if it supports the ddr3L rams or not
its very important you check your motherboard first before even trying/considering ddr3l ram

DDR3L is "low-power" DDR3 (it runs at 1.35V instead of standard 1.5V). The specs of the RAM will say what voltage it runs at, but I'm not aware of any Z170 motherboards that support DDR3, and if you're not getting a Z170 board then I don't know why you're buying a 6600k as its prominent feature is that you can overclock it, but only boards with a Z-series chipset (in this case Z170) support CPU overclocking. If you don't plan to overclock get an i5 6500 instead.

Regular DDR3 will technically work on a Skylake CPU, but you do run the risk of burning out the CPU's memory controller over long term usage if you use it. You also would need a DDR3 LGA 1151 motherboard, and the selection for those is somewhat limited. Skylake really is meant for DDR4 RAM, so you really should just move to the new memory standard. If you really need to keep your old DDR3, look at Haswell instead.
