So, I have seen some threads here, but none exactly like mine.

I had a notebook with a SSD (that came with a HD and i changed to SSD) and it was on windows 7 but it broke and was very old, so i just bought another one, an ACER Aspire E 15
with windows 10 and a 1 TB HD (useless).

What I want: Use my SSD in my new computer with windows 10. But how?

Problems: 1º My SSD is with windows 7 and my new one with 10.

2º I cant use my SSD as an external drive on the new, tried a lot, installed firmware, but it didn´t recognize it, still it doesn´t even a appear on the management.

3º Can´t download any drivers because the old SSD with windows 7 doesn´t connect on the internet.

4º No key number for windows 10, is the upgrade still free?

So my question is: what are my step in starting using my SSD drive in my new pc with windows 10, all my drives and, well... perfectly??

Thank you so much in advance for any help

I assume you want to use the new Acer since that has Win 10 already?

1. make sure the Acer with win 10 installed is activated
2. download windows 10 media creation tool and make a bootable win 10 installer on USB or DVD - your choice - get it here
3. swap ssd for hdd in Acer
4. Change boot order in bios so USB or DVD first, hdd second
5. Clean install win 10 on ssd using this guide: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html
when you get to screen asking for licence click I don't have one and win 10 will activate itself once installed
6. Win 10 will install drivers for laptop auto after install but it helps to check the Acer site to make sure they are the latest.

If Acer is activated on win 10...

If Acer is activated on win 10 using hdd, then it will fix itself up on the ssd after install. Microsoft will have a record of the laptop from step 1.

Colif, thanks very much for helping. Very good step-by-step tutorial

I tried as you said, I downloaded the bootable in a USB, but I could not boot from the USB, I tried everything, maybe it was the BIOS not up to date.

Then, I got only the wireless driver on my SSD and downloaded the media creation tool to my pc and went into the setup, to upgrade this machine. But it could not upgrade because my windows 7 is not validated. When I bought the SSD I had lost the CD-KEY, and installed a non-validy one.

Now, I dont know what to do, I cant validate this one and cant upgrade to windows 10, so its like im using the old pc on the body of the new one xD

Thanks man

this might help with the USB:

Hello there, I was encountering the exact same problem and here is how I fixed it:

1- You need to change your Bios mode from UEFI to Legacy.

2- Click F10 to save changes and restart.

3- Right after the boot press F12

4- Now select your USB drive from the list.

5- Continue with the installation.

(you might get the error that windows cannot install on a gpt drive, in which case check the following link (bottom of the page):

http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-1805141/bootable-usb-flashdrive-work-acer-aspire.html

Your Acer came with 10. Did you look to see if it was activated before making any changes? If you haven't done anything too hdd, logon to it and Click This PC on desktop, select properties, and look at the bottom of next pop up to see if its activated.

If the hdd is activated, swap out the hdd and replace it with the SSD and follow my instructions above as you don't need the Win 7 licence anymore, your PC is recognised by Microsoft as having a legit Win 10 key and should auto activate itself

Yes, its activated on the new HDD, I did put the SSD and I downloaded the media tool straight to the SSD but when it came time for the activation it said I needed a CD-KEY because my windows 7 wasn´t activated so it could not upgrade to windows 10, I mean, it did not gave me the chance to pass the activation to the automatic.

But! I did not try straight through the USB, do you think that would change something?

I thought you were doing a clean install on the ssd, instead you ran the update and that is why you cannot activate now. Booting from the USB the only way to avoid that bad key you have on win 7 and use the key that came with Acer

If you follow these instructions for a clean install: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html it will ask for your key at step 7. Do not enter a key, instead click on "I don't have a key" and the installer will continue and should activate based on the Win 10 key that came with the Acer. The tutorial should answer any other questions relating to the install you have..

but ask here if you want :)

If you get to end with the clean install of the SSD and it doesn't activate, you may need to contact Microsoft and they should fix it up at their end.

if there is anything on ssd you want to save, you can use this to copy it: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

Don't suppose you have a dvd drive? it might be easier to convince boot to use it.. I don't know about Acers but its sure the deal with Asus and most Z170 boards.

So what stage do you get WIn 10 up to on SSD? Is it installed? do you get logon screen or desktop?
Easiest way to boot from USB in Win 10 is from within windows itself.
Use one of these methods to get to advanced start up: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.html
once there, Select Use a Device - put USB in, select from the list, PC will boot using USB

Hey Colif, thanks very much for your help, I really couldn´t use the USB but i got the DVD and worked like a charm..

Burned the DVD and then inside the windows I opened the setup and it installed and self verified!

You are the man!
