What cables do I need?

Hello,

I'm building my first PC myself and have already decided on the parts. I'm aware that all the cables I need will be included with the power supply and motherboard, etc, however, I do not want rainbow coloured cables throughout the case. I will be replacing all the cables that are not black.

Here is my parts list:

What cables will I need to replace?

Please break them down accordingly as I will be ordering these and need specifics as to not order the wrong cables or miss anything and I'm not overly familiar with slang terminologies:

24 Pin ATX Cable
4+4 Pin EPS Cable
8 pin / 4+4 pin EPS Cable
Dual 6+2 Pin PCI-e Cable
Quad SATA Power Cable
Dual SATA Power Cable
Triple 4-Pin Molex Cable
Dual 4-Pin Molex Cable
SATA 3 Data Cable

Thanks in advance.

Solution
Right, here you are:

  • ■ 4*SATA 3 Data cables
    ■ HD Audio Cable (Extension)
    ■ USB 2.0 Cable (Extension)

And that's it. Everything else is sleeved black. The extensions are for your front panel connections, which come with your case and cannot be removed:

They are encased in black outer sleeves, but the ends are multicoloured. The only ones I've seen are from BitFenix:

The 380 will struggle a lot at 1440p. Also, SP series fans are meant to be used on radiators and behind HDD cages. You'll want AF series fans for the rest of the slots. Keep in mind that they are quite noisy; mine can be heard quite well once my ceiling fan is off.

To answer your initial question, you'll need:

24 Pin ATX
4+4 Pin EPS
8 Pin PCI-E x2
Dual Molex
Quad SATA Power
Dual SATA Power x2*

Technically you need only one, but depending on where you fix the SSD, HDD and Radiator you may need another one.

Keep in mind this for a 390. For a 380, you'll need two 6 pin PCI-E instead of the 8 pins. But again, the 380 will really struggle with 1440p.

Now that I re-read your post again, I see something different. You do know that all PSU cables for the P2 and G2 series are sleeved fully black right? There are no typical rainbow cables in sight:

I have a 550W G2, so I can vouch for this.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I will consider a 390 over the 380 and change the fans that will be case mounted. I understand that the PSU cables already come sleeved as that was the main reason for wanting a fully modular unit. However, there are still cables such as the SATA 3 Data cables for the DVD-R drives that normally come stock in red which I want to eliminate. Basically any cables that do not come in black I want to replace. This is not only specific to the power cables.

Excellent. Appreciate the help. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Going back to the issue you expressed with the 380, would putting a second one in crossfire help the issue or would you flat out recommend jumping up to the 390?

Also, on a completely unrelated note for another project, do you happen to know what kind of cable this is in the picture right above the sound card?

This is for another machine and it has gone missing unfortunately.

I'd recommend a 390 flat out. For one thing, some games aren't optimized for dual card configs, and will run very poorly. Two, two cards requires more power and a heftier PSU, which over time will result in increased electricity bills over a single card. Performance doesn't scale linearly when considering multiple GPUs, so you won't get double the performance in most games. Finally, and this is the kicker, vRAM doesn't stack.

What does that mean? vRAM is the RAM that's found on your GPU (That's why you say R9 380 4GB). 4GB is considered ideal for 1080p. However, you need more if gaming at 1440p, as increasing resolution eats into vRAM. You'd think that having 2 380s, each with 4GB of vRAM, would give you 8GB total, right? Unfortunately, that's not true. The data in each 380's vRAM is duplicated, so you end up with 4GB total. This will severely constrain you in games. True, DX12 does allow vRAM stacking, but as of now no games benefit from it, so until HBM (A different type of memory) is released, you can't stack vRAM. However, with the 390, you'll have 8GB of vRAM, which is plenty for 1440p gaming right now (And a little extra, which should help in the future.).

That cable is a Molex - something :??:. Do you have the model number of the soundcard? I may be able to track it down that way.

Nevermind, I tracked down the card. That's a SoundBlaster Audigy 4 Pro, or 2 ZS correct? I may be a bit off, but that's the general model line I think. If so, then that cable is most likely a 4 pin floppy drive connector - Molex. It's an obselete connector now, but back when the sound card was made it was probably in constant use.

Here you go: http://www.amazon.com/4-Pin-Floppy-Drive-SATA-Power/dp/B00NU72RIS/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1462373463&sr=1-1&keywords=sata+to+floppy

Here's a better pic of your card:

Yes, it's the SoundBlaster Audigy 4 Pro. Now looking through the cables that come with the PSU for my build, it appears to have a Molex to Floppy Cable that should work.

With that said, you've been a gentleman and answered everything plus some.

Here's the updated parts list incase you are curious:

I appreciate all your patience.

Looks good. You may want to get a 6600K and overclock if budget permits; the H100 would be a waste otherwise. You really don't need a 280mm radiator if not overclocking; A 120/140mm radiator would do fine, as would a decent air cooler like the Cryorig H7.

I tend to dissuade people from getting watercoolers if you aren't overclocking; They add an addional point of failure to the system, and don't provide enough of a cooling advantage to justify the extra cost if running at stock speeds. And when they fail, it almost always ends up in leaks, which kill other components as well (Particularly the GPU, which is right below if mounting the cooler on top).
