I connected removable storage device to my computer after forcing a shut down as the screen video input was "lost". Now I can't see my removable HDD. Under Device manager there shows an error under Other Devices - SM Bus Controller which states driver software needed but when I try update the driver software it cannot be found and I cannot see all my very important files on my removable device.

Hi there Vanessa_10,

That is really unpleasant. :(

What are the make and model of drive?

You can try several simple things:
- Attach the drive to another system in order to rule out a possible driver related issue. External drives do not require specific drivers.
- In case the issue persists, you can try using a different USB cable.

Apart from that, you can go to Disk Management and see how the drive appears over there: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cqhFLo
If it appears as unallocated or RAW, you will need to use some data recovery tool in order to retrieve the data: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Save the recovered data on another location so you don't overwrite the data...
SM Bus Controller - - you need to re-install the chipset driver package for your system from:

PC factory built: download from PC manufacturer's website.
Laptop: download from laptop manufacturer's website.
PC custom build/home build: download from motherboard manufacturer's website.

Edit: I would agree with Phillip Corcoran. You can start with updating the drivers. :)

Let me know how this goes,
