What are the make and model of drive?
You can try several simple things:
- Attach the drive to another system in order to rule out a possible driver related issue. External drives do not require specific drivers.
- In case the issue persists, you can try using a different USB cable.
Apart from that, you can go to Disk Management and see how the drive appears over there:

If it appears as unallocated or RAW, you will need to use some data recovery tool in order to retrieve the data:

Save the recovered data on another location so you don't overwrite the data stored on the drive.
Edit: I would agree with Phillip Corcoran. You can start with updating the drivers.
