I need to re-install my OS. Can I just backup or image my computer, reinstall the os, and restore from backup?

Solution

that's win 10, but he is working with win 7 which has no such feature built in.

new partition is easy. search for "disk management" and then right click your c:. chose "shrink volume" and shrink it enough to let you back up data you want to keep. then format the new partition and start moving data.

once you're done, then do the fresh install to c: and you're good to go. i ALWAYS suggest keeping data separate from windows and programs. this way if you ever need to drop in a windows disk you have nothing to lose except some time to reinstall programs.

Well can someone tell me how to move it to a different partition. Also I have a 500gb hd installed and I need to completely wipe it to factory to backup to it. How do I do that? It is my programs I do not want to reinstall.

Recommend before re-installing: set all security and firewall to OFF.

1. Set bios to boot DVD first.
2. Put Win 7 disk in drive and select: "upgrade."
3. This re-installs the OS, without erasing programs or files.
4. Simple.
