Hi
I have an older pc with xp sp3 and some low life has crept into my computer and did something making it impossible for me to boot-up unless I have my slave, storage IDE hdd, powered up. This happened a while ago but am just now asking for assistance.
Perhaps I should add that it was working fine with or without the slave, then after realizing that someone had come in externally (I could tell because everything slowed down like someone was interfering) it would no longer boot up unless the slave was powered up.

Thank you for your reply. However, my antivirus, anti malware and firewall are not the problem. Perhaps someone else will have a solution.

Actually, for a system that old, my first guess wouldn't be an intruder hacking your system. It'd be the CMOS battery dying, and your BIOS settings getting reset. Or at least getting low enough voltage to cause a spurious reset. That could explain the slowdown too - a reset to default settings would disable some of the performance optimizations available with your hardware.

If you have a multimeter, try pulling the CMOS battery and measuring the voltage. If it's low, replace it with a new one. Then try going through all the BIOS settings and make sure they're properly set.

You think someone has accessed your computer and made changes. The first thing to check is if that actually happened, and if they still have access .
But good luck

So nice of you to send your comment. Actually, if you read my original post you will see that your reply has nothing to do with the problem I am looking for help on.

Forget about the battery. Nothing wrong with the battery. The computer runs very well and I am aware enough to know when someone is messing with my computer when I am using it. I was hoping that perhaps someone would be able to recognize what sort of change could have been made to suddenly require having to have the IDE Slave powered before the computer will boot up. If it is in the BIOS then I would need a lot more guidance because I know nothing about the BIOS.
