After unplugging my PC and cleaning, my PC won't start anymore.

When I power on the PSU switch, the systen led renains dark and I can't get anything to run alltogether

It's an old PC, so I thought maybe the system battery is empty, but I think this shouldn't have such consequences.

I think the problem might be the motherboard or the psu. Is there a way to find out if the PSU is working without another PC? Can I damage another PC by trying out a danaged PSU with their system?

Mainboard: ASUS m3n78-emh hdmi
PSU: be quiet! srait power 550W

thx for your answers
regards DAMaz

Solution
check on the power supply if it has a red switch for 110v-220v make sure if your on us voltage it set to 110v if it on 220v it wont work. take the power supply 24 pin cable off the mb. jumper the green to black wire. see if anything comes on when you jumper the cable. if the power supply fan does not then the supply io bad or there a real bad dead short in the pc.

As mentioned below, double check your connections. If possible try a friend's psu and hope it gets ressurected like John Snow. If it doesn't work that way either take it to a local computer store for a check or buy a new pc, if iyours old you will need it anyway.

I did this (completely disconnected the PSU from the PC, hooked it up to a power source and connected both pins, the pin with a green wire to the adjacent pin with a black wire with a wire) and nothing happened. Is it safe to say that in any case the PSU is broken?

PSU is broken, but it might not be the only item broken. Replace the PSU (xfx ts gold 550/seasonic g550 or evga g2 550 are recommended) and hope that that's the only thing you fried because you didn't bother to read about proper computer cleaning methods

thx for all your answers. I got a new PSU and indeed my PC got resurrected.

Also, wow, didn't know one is not supposed to use a vacuum to clean the PC; I was always very carefull but I didn't know about the possibility of static.

I guess you never stop learning.

cheers
