Trying to figure out performance issues on my wife's 8 core 16 gigs of ram machine.

Ok... built her a system that I thought would be a killer upgrade for her. She mostly uses it for Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

OS - Windows 7 64 bit
Mobo - ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0
CPU - AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0 GHz (4.2 GHz Turbo)
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB)
HD - 256gb SSD ADATA SP 900
Video - GTX 760 2gb GDDR5
Close Loop Liquid cooling (no overclocking)

This computer is slow and "runs out of memory", goes "not responding" quite often... accessing external USB storage seems to take a very long time.

This is all compared to a 6 core AMD Phenom X6 system she had before with over all lesser specs.

So none of this makes sense that she seems more frustrated and things run worse than her previous system.

I have System Info in a text file and a Performance Report html file that I can post if someone needs it and can tell me the proper protocol for posting such files.

Thanks,
Gilligan

Solution
There has to be something eating up all that memory. Make sure to check the box for all users when getting a screen shot of the task manager.

Runs out of memory ? How does it runs out of memory ?
And what do you mean accessing external usb storage takes very long time ?
Nothing is overheating right ?
Check windows event viewer, system part and application part for any driver errors.
Is explorer.exe crashing all the time ?
When you open task manager, do you see windows error reporting non-stop present ?

It gives the "low memory" warning, if you look at task manager it shows that all 16gigs are basically in use.

We store all of our artwork on the external USB 3 drives... Anytime you go to those drives or tell illustrator to open a file there it just kind of takes a really long time to get moving... once moving it seems to act normal in that regard. This is the way we ran the previous system and it was never like this.

It's never shut down, and no fans are screaming, but I've never really monitored the temps (we don't over clock or anything).

Doesn't seem to be anything worth noting in the event viewer, just some Virtual Memory Low warnings, couple of reboots (one was a blue screen, one was when we tried to batch process a bunch of photos in photoshop yesterday it completely crapped the bed on us and started flashing the screen and became non-responsive, had to hard reboot).

No real explorer crashes to note other than a few random ones like mentioned above.

I have never seen "Windows error reporting non-stop" in task manager ever. Though many applications go "not responding" at times but eventually "finish" what they are doing and come back "online" again.

Sorry, I should have clarified. When I said "upgrade", I just meant "a new system for my wife"... nothing was actually "upgraded", we didn't reuse any parts. This was FRESH install of Windows 7 64bit on a fresh NTFS partition on the SSD.

I also go through several steps when creating SSD based systems to help them run better and did the same here. Such as:

- Turn off drive indexing
- Lower page file to 1024 static (I know this is my virtual memory, but we never had the issues before and her old system had 16 gigs of RAM as well. We did have an RAM issue when she was running the older version of Illustrator that was only 32 bit, but that was due to it not seeing more than 4 gigs of RAM obviously... and it went away with the 64 bit upgrade).
- Turn off Hybernate
and a few other things that I can't think of right now and I don't have my check list available at the moment.

What is actually using the memory ?
I mean 16gigs are hell lot of memory, what can use them didn't you notice which program ?
Also go in bios and disable all power saving capabilities, i guess it may turn the ports off or lowers their consumption, so re upping them takes time.
Also in windows power options set it to high performance.
This board boasts with USB speed.
Check that all drivers are installed, specially USB controller -
Asmedia USB3.0 Controller Driver V1.16.12.0 for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
Check bios version i see that the latest one has USB compatability fix:
SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 BIOS 2501 - Enhance compatibility with some USB device.
Also install the ASUS USB 3.0 Boost V1.05.18 for Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.
I am wondering what can drain so much memory, you cant top 16gigs so easily!

Edit: What PSU do you use ?

Usually Photoshop, Illustrator, Chrome and Firefox... she runs those 4 pretty much constantly jumping between them all. I agree 16gigs shouldn't be easy to fill up and in fact we didn't have these sorts of problems before and her habits didn't change over night. Now we are using a slightly newer version of Adobe stuff, but I can't see that being a problem as we have other systems using the same version without these hiccups.

We are running High Performance in power options (that's one of those settings I forgot... hard drives never sleep is specified in advanced). I'll go through the BIOS and update it while I'm in there as soon as we can pull the system down for a break.

I'll update all those drivers

PSU is nothing amazing but they have been reliable for me, Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL 600W

Any improvements ? Btw if you upgrade to win10 you may see a lot of performance gain.

Still saying out of memory often.

BIOS was already at the latest.

Updated to latest USB3 drivers from ASUS's website. Went further and found more updated drivers, but they really threw a kink in the system. Dropped back to the ones that were from ASUS's website.

Here we are basically not really any noticeable improvement.

Windows 10 is NOT an option.

I'll get some screen shots.

I think the main thing is, we didn't have this problems with a lesser system and not much else has changed. She uses the computer the same this month as she did last month, you know?

Don't know but this might help you. Try disabling the page file and then reboot and check the performance 'My Comp right click >Properties>Advance Setting>Advance>Performance click setting>Advanced Virtual Memory click Change. Disable all programs from startup using msconfig.

We have 2 fx8350 one at work and mine at home. Paul's pc he spent £300 on the motherboard and 32gigs of ram. Booth machines simlier specs but run complete different. Clean installs and ssd. Seen this with intel and and amd apu. Its sometimes pick of the draw.
