Is Windows 10 good for a slow computer?

I have a laptop running an Intel Core i3-3110M @2.40 GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD. Should I upgrade to Windows 10? It upgraded once, without me knowing it (dammit Microsoft), and ran incredibly slowly for 5 mins. I went back to 8.1, because I didn't really want to upgrade then anyway. Is Windows 10 faster on a slow laptop, or would Windows 8.1 be the better choose (bare in mind I do light gaming on this machine, such as low settings TF2, Age of Empires 2 HD or anything similar).

Solution
I recommend the upgrade because Windows 10 is able to take better advantage of lesser hardware, therefore it will perform better on lower spec machines. However, keep in mind that there are certain things that can weigh down Windows 10 and keep it from performing optimally, things like extra startup objects and a presence of the Windows.old folder.

Startup objects consume RAM and processor clock and basically slow the computer down. Just be aware that some startup objects are necessary, like drivers, control programs and antivirus programs. When it comes to the Windows.old folder, it's basic logic that the cleaner the hard drive, the faster the computer. I recommend running Windows 10 for at least a week and making sure it's stable...

i have it running on an old atom based netbook with 2 gb ram and it runs a bit better than it did with win 7 starter on it.

i see no issues with it on some older hardware and have installed it for clients on a number of older vista based systems!! you can turn off a couple features if need be to speed it up a lot which is easy to do. turning off animations in the settings and even superfetch will easily lower the needed resources for it to run if you are concerned there. as this is also designed to be mobile compatible if you are comfortable turning off services there a bunch that are mobile specific you can do without to save resources as well. all the phone, tablet services are obvious as well as a bunch of biometric login type stuff if you won't be using them. i freed up a ton of ram and such on some older systems this way.

dex also on laptops like yours some of the system ram is used for the video card so your os and games will not see full 4g of ram. with intel mb the most usable ram is 3.2g with a 4g stick with no onboard gpu. i would run crucial memory advisor see if you have an open ram slot on your laptop. if you do and the unit can go to 8g of ram i would install the extra ram and have ms or the laptop vendor send you 64 bit cd so you can use full amount of ram.

Please do not attempt to simply delete Windows.old, it's best to open Disk Cleanup and select "Clean up System Files" and select Previous Windows Installations. I recommend running disk cleanup monthly.

i have a drawer full of network adapters that won't work, or only partially work on win10. I even ordered a set of AC netgear adapters from newegg thinking anything that modern would have a win10 driver. nope. I think you are being too generous with the driver statement.
