I currently have AT&T uverse internet and i have the fastest package they offer at my location 50 down and 5 up since getting my internet upgraded i have noticed my ping in just about everything has gone up 40-50 ms (league, starcraft, warcraft, etc.). i also have a friend who lives 3 houses up the street that is on time Warner cable and he gets about half my ping on the same games as well as having (confirmed because i did not believe him) 200 down 20 up internet seed from time Warner. My question is how is it possible for me to have much higher ping after upgrading my internet to a faster speed and how is it possible for my friend who lives on the same street to have a internet package no isp in my area says they offer? on another note i contacted AT&t tech support and they had no idea what a trace route is so they bumped me to a higher tier tech and what a surprise he wanted me to buy some BS tech support plan called ATT connect tech for 15$ a month... is there anything i can do on this front?

First of all start a methodic approach to testing speeds and watching your router's logs and system's logs for errors or warnings. See if there is a pattern to the loss of speed. Double check all settings and configurations. Look for local wireless interference if applicable.

Second, do a careful interior and exterior inspection of your wiring, cabling, and cables. Could be a loose, bad, corroded, kinked, rodent chewed, etc., etc. cable or connector along the way.

Third, make sure that AT&T correctly upgraded your plan. Call for confirmation/verification. Just ask for details regarding your plan.

Fourth, remember that in games there are all sorts of "cheats" going on. Maybe, somehow, you have become an open victim.
