I'm not sure how I've made do with this rig for so long.. I do a lot of 3d, rendering, modeling, etc (Film production kinda stuff), sometimes reaching tens of millions of polygons.

My rig runs EXTREMELY slowly under a heavy work load.. or at least heavy for my system. Crashes occur often, 60% of somewhat major operations will freeze or in some crash my PC. Fun aye?

My position at the moment leave a few options.

- Upgrade this snail of a PC on a budget, CPU namely.

- Wait 6 month- a Year and build a monster PC, with no budget.

I suppose I'm just asking, should I waste some money now to keep my sanity whilst working. OR just endure the pain for a year.

Is my system worth upgrading?

Thanks in advance, sorry for the illiterate post, haven't slept in a few days :)

Specs as of now.

2 monitors running, corsair 430w PSU, i think...

I'd be surprised if the GPU wasn't holding you back a bit as well, as well as the amount of RAM in your system. The fact that nearly 3GB of your pagefile is being used is awful.

personally id buy a second hand i5/i7/xeon, depending on your budget and then get a new CPU/motherboard/ram later on.

What kind of performance boost would this give?

New RAM and an i3 over a pentium. The i3 will run smoother with it's hyperthreading rather than the no hyperthreading pentium. RAM amount will be useful as the programs you'll be running are also RAM heavy.

So, it's really up to you. $150 imo isn't all that much for an upgrade, and especially if it's for work, time is money. The other note I would have: Have you attempted to re-install windows from a bootable ISO? If you've never reinstalled, the system will eventually slow down after years of use. And given that you're running a 2130, it's been a few years.

in theory the i5 would be twice as fast with double the cores and the clock boost, the i7/xeon would be best as it can thread things much better but will cost more. even an i3 would have noticeable benefits over the pentium. you would be looking for an i5 35** or an i7 37**

Imo, get the i5/i7/xeon (preferably the i7 or xeon) when you go do the major upgrade later. If you're just looking for sanity now, go with something that'll give you a performance boost until you're able to upgrade fully. Then, the i7/xeon/i7 E would be perfect.

Would this be compatible with my system ?
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-core-i7-6700k-s1151-oem

Could you recommend a cpu fan/cooler for it as well. This is seemingly the best route, I wanna keep the cpu in tip top health until further part upgrades.
thanks again

... is this for right now or later? Cause if it's for right now, you got a whole slew of other crap you gotta update as well.

If it's for later, and you're not going to be overclocking intensively then I would go with the Hyper 212 evo. This also works for light overclocking.

Edit: I dumbed, I think. No it's not compatible with your system, you need to look for an i7 3xxx as you're in third gen intel. Anything that isn't an i3/i5/i7 3xxx will not work with your system.

So I'll just buy a i5 3750k?
use that until full pc upgrade.
