I have a Cisco DPC3941t 802.11 ac router in my living room. In my bedroom I have a desktop with Windows 10 and I recently installed TP-Link Archer T9E wireless card and getting 550 Mbps on 5 Ghz. I shared a network drive from that computer and when I copy files to my macbook pro (450 Mbps wireless connection located in bedroom), I am getting only 4 megabytes/sec of transfer rate. Any reason why so slow ? I feel like the router and network adapters are pretty good and I my macbook pro has wireless N network adapter. My internet speed on both desktop and laptop is 120 Mb/s down and 13 Mb/s upload.

There's nothing at all wrong. You're transferring data between two nodes on a single-duplex protocol, you will never see the advertised rate, maybe half if you're lucky. Think trying to converse on a CB radio where there can only be one active transmitter at a time on a single channel. One person talks for a bit, then stops and waits for the response. Lather, rinse, repeat. 4MB/sec is an excellent rate over wireless.

So what can I do to improve my file transfer speeds ? Would wiring the desktop to an ethernet help ? I might have to run long cables sigh.

I wired my old windows laptop that has a gigabit adapter and also wired the windows 10 desktop via ethernet. Both devices wired to the router. I am getting 70 Megabytes/second of file transfer speed with both devices wired. Still not even close to 1 Gbps, what would be the cause?
