I currently have a ASUS GeForce GTX 960 STRIX 4GB DirectCU II OC but am not happy with it's performance in some of the new games I play.
Because of this, I'm thinking about upgrading my GPU and I have looked at the ASUS Radeon R9 390X STRIX GAMING 8GB.
I spoke to a friend about this today and he insisted that my screen, a BenQ XL2411Z, can't display 144hz with the Radeon card.
Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

I am not 100% what your friend meant by that , so lets break it down:
If he meant that a R9 390X does not have the necessary performance to manage 144fps on AAA games, then yes, he is correct. No GPU in the market right now can manage 144fps in 2560x1440p , unless you set details to very low. But the 960 is a lot worse that the R9 390X. Generally , you should be able to get about 80-100 fps in normal games and 45-60 fps in AAA , in ultra settings that is.

If he meant that the screen is somehow not compatible with the R9 390X , then he is incorrect. Screens are not hardware bound, except for freesync and Gsync monitors, but your monitor is neither. A 390X will be quite able to work with your monitor.

The phrase "cant display 144hz " is...

The phrase "cant display 144hz " is kind of confusing . To begin with, your monitor has a refresh rate of 144hz. That means that it "refreshes" the image you see 144 times per second. Thus , you can only gain in smoothness up until 144 FPS, because after that, your screen has become too 'slow'. The GPU processes data and sends it to your monitor. The stronger the GPU , the more the FPS. But that has nothing to do with your monitors refresh rate. Your monitor will keep doing its thing in 144hz, regardless of hoe many fps your gpu is processing.

Lastly, some advice: I have a R9 390, and I strongly recommend against getting a R9 390X right now. Make no mistake , my GPU is wonderful. Amazing really, for its price. Its just that in a month or two, nvidia and amd will release their new GPUs , which will offer a LOT more performance that current GPUs.Thus, buying a GPU now is not wise , since you will be wasting your money

Thanks a lot for your reply.

The reason for my interest in a new GPU is that I suddenly had extremely poor performance in games like CS:GO and Overwatch.
I just reinstalled my Nvidia driver and it seems to have helped, based on the result from Heaven Benchmark.
The card got really hot (around 75c with the fans running at around 2500rpm, and the games felt really laggy.
I have thought about upgrading the card before but this made me think about it again.
After looking at benchmarks of different GPU's, I came to the conclusion that the 390X would be great (both performance and price-wise) when running Win10.
Problem with getting a new GPU is of cause that it's expensive and money isn't something I have a lot of. I fear that the new cards coming to the market will cost too much for me but I will wait and see what price they'll end up on and take it from there.

Well the thing about these new gpus is that while they will indeed be more expensive, they will also be a lot stronger. To put this into context , a 480x could perform almost like a 980ti. As a result , a card like a 1060/480 or even a 470x will probably be equal to the 390x. Then you just have to wait until they are on sale. Furthermore, the 960 should be running CS:GO smoothly , for overwatch I dont know, since I have yet to play it myself. There was a bad nvidia driver as of late, so that was probably your problem. 75 C is not that bad a temperature, especially if you live in a hot country. Still the 960 is a cool card so I guess 69-72 C would be more reasonable. In general dont worry about temps until you hit 80C , and that only with specific gpus. The 390 for example can get up to 82C, but it usually run at 76-78C. Lastly, if this ever occurs again, I recommend downloading a previous driver and seeing if the problem persists.

I live in Sweden and it's starting to get a bit warm so I understand the temps are going up (my CPU does as well).
I'm taking your advise and will keep my eye's open for the new GPU's, and hopefully they wont be too expensive for me in a few months or so.
If I'm experiencing more problems like this, I'll try a driver a few versions older to see if that helps.
The card I have now is still in warranty so should something really be wrong with it, I can always take it to the store (guess I'm hoping something will be wrong with it by the time I can afford the upgrade as it will make it a lot cheaper, hehe).

Thanks again for your advise. Very appreciated!

The new cards from Nvidia will be 350USD(1070) at TitanX performance and 599USD(1080). AMD's cards will have much lower prices. The 480x will be around 250USD and could(supposively) be at 980ti performance. The 490 and 490x will be in the 300-450USD range and are likely to be performing at 1070/1080 performance. Don't take my word on it, but i am 100% sure that your wait will be worth it. And remember this will be in June! Can't wait!

350USD(1070) at TitanX performance and 599USD(1080).

I bet You wont get them for that price for another year , that was the min amount , and they will keep the prices close to the founders for some time.

True price is 450 and 700
