HP Pavillion dv4-2145dx laptop --> DVDRW drive will not play DVD discs

Recently I inherited a HP Pavillion dv4-2145dx laptop but found that it won't play DVD discs. It reads CD discs, but not DVD. When I put a DVD in, it whirs as if it is spinning up and then there is a faint clicking(ish) sound that clicks 4 times, pauses, then repeats. And it just continues to do that. I have gone through the Fixit routine from Microsoft, added a new services control registry key... nothing. Then I actually replaced the drive with one I got from Amazon that was warrantied 30 days as working when sent. So I'm pretty sure it works.

I don't know. At a loss. My next step is to tear down the machine and see if something is loose or if there is something.... idk, something out of order.

Any ideas???

No that's not it either. Nothing is showing up as in the DVD drive when there is a DVD actually in there. Again, there is a whirring startup sound and then a series of clickish sounds and that just repeats but nothing ever opens.

I just booted the machine from Ubuntu. Same thing. Spins and then clicks a series of 4 clickish sounds. Again, this is the replacement drive as well as the original drive doing it.

I actually replaced the drive with one I got from Amazon that was warrantied 30 days as working when sent. So I'm pretty sure it works. Same thing is happening in both drives
