I have a rogers Rocket Hub internet plan in Canada and plan to get a new router that can deal with my family's excessive bandwidth usage, and a few other things, but mainly our Ericcson W35 is a little outdated and keeps freezing to the point where we need to restart it once a day.

Anyone aside from that, if I were to go to the store, could I pick up any router there, or would I need to pick out a specific one? My current router, the Ericcson W35 is one of those plug and go routers with no modem or anything. We just need to plug in a Rogers SIM card into it and it pretty much works anywhere.

So to wrap up the question that got me thinking, do all network types require different routers? Or are they all compatible with each other?

2 different things (actually 3):

Modem
Router
Modem/router

The modem is the tech specific part. A DSL modem will not work with a cable connection.
A cable modem will not work with a FiOS connection.

If there are two individual boxes, modem and router...any router would work. The modem outputs a signal that any router can accept.

A modem/router, which is the typical thing you get from the ISP, is both functions in one box, is again connection specific.
The modem part (input from the ISP) is the part that makes a difference.

So from what I said above, what internet connection would you judge I have? I live in the country so there are no cable lines or anything. All I know is we have the router and we connected it to a popsicle antenna. Just wondering so I know which router to get

Ericcson W35

3G service. No cable, no DSL, no fiber, no wire of any kind.
Magic waves through the air.

Primarily, you have to look at the devices your provider recommends.
