Won't directly boot after power off

Hi there.

I have a weird problem I can't seem to diagnose, so I'm asking for help, see if any of you have found out something like this.

The system is an i7 4940 with a Gigabyte H97-HD3 mobo, and 16 Gb of RAM (Kingston Hyper-X DDR3, 2 modules).

Upon booting, everything works just fine... but everytime power goes off (due to power failure, or whatnot), the system won't boot up till I clear CMOS, remove one of the RAM modules, and boot again... after that (I get to the UEFI screen saying to load optimized defaults or enter UEFI), I can just shut it down, plug the RAM module again and it'll again boot just fine.

At first I thought it could be some power issue... I don't have any spare PSU, but the one installed is a Tacens 800W relatively new (~ 1 or 1.5years), and unplugging everything from it (just keeping the mobo, RAM, Processor and using the integrated VGA) will not boot, so I'm ruling that out.

When I say it doesn't boot, I mean it bootloops... I heard a repeating clicking noise when booting, and I thought one of my hard-drives was going down, but after some diagnosing, the clicking noise actually comes from the PC speaker... it seems it gets to the point where the PC speaker is supposed to do the beep sound, but it reboots right after that (unplugging the speaker doesn't help either).

As I said, the system works just fine after booting (I'm writing from it), memory tests come out ok, and there's nothing "visibly" wrong.

I don't mind changing the mobo, the RAM, the PSU or anything else, but since I don't have spares and I don't want to be buying and returning parts, I thought I'd rather ask here just in case there's some specific things I could try first.

Thanks

I have the latest "stable" version. There's a newer version but it's marked as beta, so I'm hesitant to install it (the changelog actually says "Fix memory compatibility", but what do you know).

Thing is, this worked fine before with the very same hardware... at some point it started failing, so I'm sure there's some hardware problem to it, I just don't know where to look, and again, problem is that I don't have any spares to test (rest of my computers are laptops, so I can't cannibalize to test anything) :-/

Thanks for your answer though

Which jumper? You mean clearing the CMOS? As I said, I do this everytime it won't boot

I have a surge protector... no UPS though, I have that in my home-server. This computer is not critical, I can afford it going off, just don't like to, but I don't think working around the problem is the way to go, I'd rather fix it :)

there is a jumper setting/switch on most motherboards...ur motherboard has 1 x Clear CMOS jumper...check the manual to locate it...

"I can afford it going off"...
that is a very bad practice which will eventually lead to more hardware failures...u shd consider a ups, even if its a cheap one...

As I said in the OP, that's what I do every time this happens (get a RAM module out, clear the CMOS, boot to UEFI, shut down, plug RAM module again, and boot)... by the next time the computer turns off, it won't boot again so I have to do it again.

As a matter of fact, I do tweak the UEFI settings to my liking, but I have tried other times just loading the defaults and it happens the same (so it doesn't seem to be related to any UEFI setting I have)

Yes, I could have an UPS for every electrical device in my house, but I have many :)
I have an UPS for what is critical (that is: the home server where I store my data)... the rest are protected by surge protectors. Not that network power-offs happen all the time (it was months since the last one this time), but it happened yesterday and I just came to ask.

I'd say not fixing whatever is causing the issue is more prone to more hardware faults than electrical network problems.

I think I agree with that. Maybe he should get a new MOBO.
