Hi, i would like some advice on whether i need a nas or just a bigger ext hdd. I have a media player that i store my dvd rips/films on with a 2tb hdd and an ext hdd same size that is my backup incase it dies. I also have other size ext hhd for my pics, t.v etc because of limited space so a friend suggested that i create a nas and put it all on one which is fine but im on a budget and it looks cheaper to just buy a bigger ext hdd plus i see alot of mixed reviews on the synology and qnap regarding software ease of use. Then do i get a 2 bay and raid 1 it or 4 bay and raid 5 it incase the box dies. Could really use some advice and experience here please

External storage is probably cheaper than a NAS in the short run, but a NAS...

External storage is probably cheaper than a NAS in the short run, but a NAS will be upgradable to bigger drives in the future. NAS gives you the option to leave the thing running, so you don't have to plug it in, and it's easily accessible from all of your computers. It's probably a little more maintenance though, in keeping the NAS running. Custom NAS Solutions (like sinology or WD MyCloud) can be easier to use, but most people here on tomshardware should be able to set up freenas using commodity hardware they've got lying around.
