Just wanted to know if i should get a gtx 1080 or just go for 2x gtx 1070 as it comes to near the same price? if i get the 1070's i will be adding a 3rd later on in the year :)

Solution

Except the new 1080 crushes even a Titan X which is a killer as is at 1440. No reason to SLI for 1440, even the 1070 will probably fly at that resolution.
Go with a good single card always.
You will win fps benchmarks with dual cards, but you will be exposed to gameplay issues such as stuttering, screen tearing, and non support of dual gpu in some games.

And... adding a third card brings diminishing returns.

A fast single first card preserves your option to add a second later.

Thank's everyone, i dont mind about the returns on the cards i just love having loads of powerr lol, i think i will just get 2x 1070's also they both will be watercooled so i can get a decent overclock out of them, not sure if i should buy the founders one or a gigabyte or evga card.

Another recommendation for single card.

Support still to this day is spotty. Heck I had a game I played last night that worked BETTER when I disabled crossfire! Never again will I do dual cards unless I'm going ultra high end (like dual Fury X's or 1080ti's) to run multiple monitors at 4k.

Planning on overclocking and watercooling cards that will demolish any game available is planning to waste money. I mean hey its your money, but to me there are only 2 reasons to overclock, better performance because the card is a little less than it should be in some games, or bragging rights (which is the waste part).

The only reason to go SLI right out of the gate is if the best of the best still isn't good enough (and you're doing two highest end cards), otherwise the single best card you can afford at the time will always be the key feature for a system that will have the longest 'future-proof' potential.

Looking at past AAA titles, (arkham knight, far cry, tomb raider, fallout 4, xcom 2 and so much more) SLI isn't supported at lauch and it's usually a while until they get proper patches to support it. My advice would be to go the simple way. Wait for a 1080 ti or get a stronger, single card to avoid having to wait for games to support SLI.

I don't have any real SLI complaints either, though I use single card configs as well. However, I don't buy new titles at launch, waiting for patches/drivers to iron things out. I'm looking at 1070 SLI myself, though I wouldn't recommend 3-way due to diminished returns. For me(with proper SLI scaling), one 1080 isn't enough, and two is to expensive. I went this route w/ my 970s and very happy with my choice. I've been using SLI/Crossfire for my main setup since mid 2007. I'm not saying there aren't issues that can crop up from multi-GPU setups, but for my own gaming experience its been great.

I have 2 1070s running in SLI, and they easily overpowered 1 1080, however, SLI configurations can be an annoyance at times, and you won't get perfect 2x performance when running 2 1070s, if anything, its more like 1.5x performance. I have two of these by the way: http://cplonline.com.au/asus-geforce-dual-gtx1070-o8g-graphics-card.html

That being said, I highly recommend buying a 1080 as it is far more affordable than 2 1070s and will perform (maybe not comparably) extremely well regardless.

Honorable
A single GTX1070 is enough for 1440p. the performance / price ratio of the GTX1080 is not worth it, less so SLI GTX1070.

but seems like you want bragging rights, if so then obviously GTX1070SLI will dominate the GTX1080. even CF RX480 is quite similar to GTX1080.

In days gone by, the advice was to buy the best GPU you could afford and then add another one when performance began to lag. These days, it's far better to sell your current GPU and use that to fund the new one.

Like it or not, SLI is being pushed aside; even Nvidia are distancing themselves from it.

I can speak personally as I have two 1070 SLI's. For the games that can take advantage of it, 4K gaming is consistently 65+ FPS, whereas a single 1080 will have trouble pushing 55fps. Scaling increases with resolution. At less than 4k, a single card is better. I am glad I got the two cards for my 4k setup.
