What is the Best encryption software around for Hard Drives, e-mail and so on?
I'm not buying it for me but a friend asked me so I'll ask you.

well, email encryption isn't really an option unless you host your own email (exchange) server. if he has gmail, that email will remain unencrypted on googles's servers somewhere regardless of what ever other encryption he has going on. Now there are encryption services, which allow you to send encrypted emails, typically these are part of a secure delivery service like what GE hosts; where the recipient recieves an email informing them of their encrypted email waiting for them elsewhere, and then they have to validate their ID with that website in order to recieve the email.

As for local encryption, bit locker, microsoft's own encryption program is pretty much unbreakable, and easy to use. if you want something "not" microsoft, you...

Well it's not like he's sending any classified files, at least I don't think so.

I heard that drilling a hard drive will encrypt & destroy but that's a different topic. :)

hahaha. well "encrypt" is an interesting word for it. If you break the hard drive platters you can securely destroy the data on them for the most part. that said the FBI certainly has the equipment to mostly reconstruct it if the platters aren't thoroughly destroyed. but assuming you have nothing to fear from the FBI a simple drill through the platters will deter a simple data theft.
