Its the first time im writing to this forum so excuse me for any mistakes. I have an asus crosshair v formula z mobo and i am trying to overclock my amd fx8350. The highest stable overclock i managed is 4.7 ghz with 1.506250 volts and 75 degrees with prime95. Also lld is at ultra high. When i try 4.8 ghz i have to raise voltage but temps go above 80 in few seconds. I want to reach 5.0 ghz but it seems impossible. Do i have a bad chip or something is wrong with psu?
case: coolermaster storm trooper
cpu: amd fx 8350
mobo: asus crosshair v formula z
ram: 4x4 kingston hyperx fury 1833
cpu cooler: noctua nh d14
psu: corsair 750 watt 80+bronze
graphics: sapphire r7 370 nitro 4gb

Nothing is wrong with your chip, my 8350 has also reached 4.7Ghz and cannot go beyond that. Some chips cannot reach the 4.8-5.0Ghz mark. One thing to consider is: even tho the NH D14 is an awesome air cooler and performs admirably well, it's not as good as an water cooler. My 8350, at 4.7Ghz, cooled by a H100i, gets maximum 62-63ºC on a 25ºC Room (while running prime95). AMD says 62ºC is the maximum temperaute your chip should handle to grant stability and the longevity of the chip. Your's is running at 75ºC, which is 3ºC higher if you take out a 10ºC "safezone" from the limit temperature, which makes 72ºC your "true" limit.

So:
1) You should consider buying a Water Cooler if you want to run your 8350 on 4.7 on a day to day. High temperatures also decreases the chip stability. MAYBE, if you buy a Water Cooler and temps go down, you can either decrease vCore for 4.7 a bit or try to push more to reach 4.8Ghz, since you'll have more room for increasing temps.

2) If you try to push your chip to 4.8Ghz, since you are already at such high voltages, I suggest bumping the NB and HT Link voltages and frequencies a little bit ( I have mine both at 2400Mhz ).

3) Just a tought: do you really think those extra 100Mhz on the CPU are worthy so much hassle? 4.7Ghz is already a very good overclock.

Thank you for time to help me. It does not worth the money to buy a water cooler only for 100 mhz as the corsair h110i costs 168 euros in my country (greece).

I have the exact same mobo and cpu as you and I run at 4.68 with 1.344 V using the FSB. maybe work on your overclock settings, and as these guys have stated I would not raise your voltage anymore as your temps are already really high. Also I would recommend using overdrive to monitor your temperatures as it is the most accurate.

Read that also, if you haven't already. it helped me out a lot with overclocking.

You can have 4.8Ghz with 1.375V to CPU and 1.175V to northbridge and if you can get the multiplier to 23.5 you don't have to increase the bus frequency above 205 as your memory frequency is also increased and becarefull your amd overdrive temp not fall below 10 C. You may need to increase the voltage a bit more as each cpu is bit different.

Fx-8350 is an 8 core processor that runs at 4.0Ghz and NH-D14 is more than enough to get him 5.1Ghz with 1.4375V to CPU and 1.2V to northbridge with multiplier at 25.5 and fsb at 201. The problem is he has 4 dimms that they generate a lot of heat and I can't recommend to get fsb higher in this frequency.

Did you tried the 4.8Ghz and you failed ? That was the first easy step i gave you!? The memory is respossible for your problems. Try adding 0.05V and to the memory (not more) or try to set it in lower frequency in order to work do the settings from bios and don't forget to increase the voltage and to northbridge.

Worst case schenario if you can't find stable settings with the memory you got increase the multiplier to 24 and keep the fsb to 200 or 201 for 4.8Ghz with 1.375V to CPU and 1.175V to northbridge.

I told you to enter the bios and put these settigs in there if the setttings you used for the memory are not right you get into a boot loop untill the defaults are load automaticly. If you pass that stage it means the OC was succefull and if you can't boot to windows the problem is in the hard drive boot from the cdrom (if you have) chose to repair the system, open a command line and type "chkdsk c:/f" and when it finished "sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows" all the errors will fixed and you will be able to boot. In this link

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/fx-8350-vishera-review,review-32550-2.html

you will see they used almost the same settings i gave you.

Hallo again i was very busy with my work that's why i did not answer soon. Finally i changed the cpu cooler fron noctua nh d14 to corsair h110i gt. I managed 4.8 ghz with 1.55 vcore and ram from 1866 to 2133 with 1.6 voltage stable. My temps are 40 degrees idle (now its summer and room temperature is 30-32 degrees) and with prime 95 reaches 70 degrees. One minor is that h110i gt is very noisy. Do you think 1.55 cpu voltage is killing my cpu?
