Vonage asking me to put my Desktop on DMZ?

Hello everyone!
I have a Vonage as my IP phone service provider and FIOS (actiontec Router) as my ISP. Vonage service recently started acting up. When I get an incoming call, I can hear the other person but they cannot hear me. If I initiate the call I have no issues.

I called Vonage support and their service tech suggested that I put my desktop computer IP address in the DMZ setting of my router. I do not like this at all but to be honest it is the only thing that has solved the issue.

I setup the vonage device as a static IP and then set the port forwarding rules. This did not work at all. I also tried to setup the vonage device on the DMZ. This did not resolve the issue.

Is it safe to leave my PC (Win 7) in the DMZ? Why would seting my Desktop on the DMZ fix the issue? I have not clue of what is going on.

Much thanks for any suggestions or explanations.

Seb.

Well that is strange if you have a hardware device from them that you would even need the computer to make or receive calls.

DMZ places your computer outside of the routers firewall. This is not exactly a good thing. The computer has some of its own software build in to help with this type of issue, but I am sure there has to be a better way.
