Is the gtx 960 with 4gb ddr5 vram and the gtx 970 overkill for a 1400 x 900 monitor?

I have a 1400 x 900 display. My current card is a gt 730. IKR. The shop ripped me off. Anyway, Im going for an upgrade, so is getting the Asus strix gtx 960 with 4gb gddr5 or gtx 970 a waste of money for my system? I plan on playing graphically demanding games on high settings (Witcher 3 etc...). So do I need these types of cards or is a cheaper card fine? If so, which one?

It depends on whether your CPU is able to keep up with the GTX 970. If so, go for it if you want to have some headroom as games get more demanding. But for now, I doubt the GTX 960 will have any problem giving you 60 fps at max/near max settings.

Requires some 70 W extra to give those 3-4 FPS more. Lacks Nvidia gameworks, CUDA, has worse driver support, overclocks poorly compared to 960, no MFAA, no G-Sync and the list goes on. R9 380 will cost almost same as GTX 960 or maybe more.

If you ask me, I won't even mind going for R9 380 or in general any AMD card unless I get a very good deal. I can't stand thelack of Nvidia related features, high power consumption, more heat etc.
