USB Controllers "bad" do I need a new mobo?

Over the last few weeks, the PC would randomly lock up when doing normal things eg. browsing, working etc.

Sometimes it would be boot properly (go through the normal black bios text screen) other times I would have to reset it several times by pressing the reset or do a hard reset and hold it for 10 seconds. Sometimes, the boot process would stop part way like just before the USB controllers prompt other times before the CD rom prompt.

Just today it locked up again and now I can't boot at all. I see the PC tower's hard drive buttons working but not [monitor] display.

I was thinking that maybe my video card may be the culprit. Then I reconsidered that it may be the USB controllers. I disconnected all USB connections with the exception of the mouse and keyboard. I have a few USB hubs from two monitors connected to my computer case.

I rebooted and everything seems fine (so far). However, I am wondering how likely do USB plugs fail on a mobo? If they do, must I get a new mobo?

Solution
they can fail. it's also can be one of the signs of a failing motherboard.

-it might be one of your usb devices failing instead of the motherboard. failing usb devices can cause all sorts of issues; from crashing and booting issues to basically crippling windows to the point you think your pc is mostly locked up.

My mobo is Asus and I was told it's quite rare for a mobo to fail especially from a major manufacturer.

They symptoms you describe sounds like what I have been experiencing. I am hoping it's my Dell monitors (USB hub) that is the problem vs my mobo instead.

Having said that, is there any "fix" for faulty USB mobo controllers on a mobo?

well, if it's a driver problem, simply update the drivers, otherwise, nope.

I would unplug all the usb devices except for the keyboard and mouse and reboot your system. see if the problem goes away. if it doesn't then i would try different keyboard and mice just to make sure it's not a mouse/keyboard causing it.

other things that run through the southbridge are diskdrives and dvd drives... unplug all drives except for your hard drive and see if the issue goes away. if nothing works, i would run a hard drive diagnostic to make sure the hard drive isn't failing.
