my desk top computer crashed. I had an external Seagate hard drive connected to it that backed up all my files. now I am trying to access those files on my lap top. I can not seem to open the external hard drive to access the files. I did download the software for the Seagate external hard drive. I really need to get to those files! HELP!

I'd recommend you check how the external HDD is recognized in Disk Management and Device Manager. You should also try using a different USB cable and attempt to connect it to a different USB port on the laptop. Once you install the brand-specific backup software, I'd also advise you to download their diagnostic utility in order to check up on the health and SMART status of the external drive.
