Windows update failing to update/ install a bunch of updates?

I just did a clean install of Windows 7, but when I was installing the whopping 145 updates or so it was just stuck at 0% and said something like "update failed" (something along those lines). I was only able to install a total of 11 updates so far.
I've tried to use the "Check windows for updates", but it just says "Checking for updates" and shows that it's loading but never finishes. Is there a way around this or a way to force install updates?
Also, under the update history page it shows that the other handful of updates were stated as "failed" under the status tab.
I appreciate all the help. If you have any questions or need any extra information then please let me know and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

So I cleared it out and I tried to run the windows update service, but it still just shows it as if it were loading. Should I just let it run over night?

I had just deleted the old files, and now I'm running the "Checking for updates" thing after restarting my computer. Hopefully it'll actually find the updates so I can get it going. Guess I'll just wait for the morning. Thanks for your help!

I actually had another quick question that hopefully you can help me with-
After I clean installed my windows and all that stuff, I downloaded the Overwatch beta and started playing it, but I noticed that my audio was cracking and my fps was spiking/ dropping randomly. I have a GTX 970, 16GB RAM, Intel Xeon CPU E3-1231 v3.
So I guess I was wondering if that could happen because of the windows updates not being installed, or possibly my CPU? I checked my resource monitor and it was shooting up to 100% usage for what seemed like no reason. Any ideas?
(Thanks again, I really appreciate it)

Hi there, firstly, to me there is definitely an issue with windows update in windows 7 of late. Twice I have had major refusal of windows update to find any updates on new installations of TWO separate systems on two separate dates in the last 6 weeks!

Here is how I solved the problem which worked on both systems on both occasions!

(1) Download KB 3138612

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

(2) Download windows system update readiness tool (SUR tool)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/what-is-the-system-update-readiness-tool

(3) Remove any installed updates you may have ( like the previous poster suggested)

(4) Disconnect from the internet to prevent windows from looking for updates in the background

(5) Install KB Which may take a little while to run as it searches the system for updates . You may need to reboot to install whatever updates windows finds here -again STAY DISCONNECTED FROM THE INTERNET!

(6) Install the SUR Tool, which again may take a little while scanning your system. When it is finished, reboot the PC , connect to the internet, then manually search for windows updates via the usual fashion.

You should find that windows now WILL find updates but less of them overall, WILL find them in about an hour or so and WILL install them!

The above method has worked for me perfectly twice now with windows 7 professional SP1 x64 and hopefully will work for you too.

In reference to your other query on the Overwatch Beta NOT running smoothly, it is unlikely to be much to do with windows updates but you will be able to rule that out shortly, its unlikely that its your CPU as long as the thermals are ok and surely that CPU can handle the workload as it basically on par with i7-4790k (minus the integrated graphics).

I presume you have installed the most recent chipset drivers for your mobo ( from manufacturers website) and the most recent NVIDIA driver ( again from NVIDIA website) ??

IF so and everything else ( including other games and programs ) is running fine, then it is more likely to be because the game is a BETA and is not yet optimized fully to run with all systems! My advice? Try another game that is not in Beta phase.

Hope this helps.

I really REALLY appreciate your help and the advice you gave me, and I downloaded KB (some random number) and finally got all my windows updates updated and that definitely helped with a part of the issue, but now my disk activity is constantly spiking, which I think was apart of the problem that I was having, so now I just have to figure that one out.

When u say your disk activity is constantly spiking, what do you mean? When you are gaming/ downloading or when system is idle? I will need these details + what type of drive you you are using to advise. You are welcome BTW. :)

Thanks again for keeping up with this post. :)
It's practically all the time, but it's definitely noticeable when I'm playing games. In League of Legends my FPS counter goes above 300, and then not too long into the game it drops to below 60, goes up to 90-100, then drops again. Here's a picture that I took about 10 minutes ago while my computer is idle. http://imgur.com/PbycHnT So to answer your question it's both, but when gaming the spiking is a lot more frequent. I'm also not too sure what you mean by that, but according to the Samsung Magician program, I have these:
Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
WDC WD10EZEX-22BN5A0
I -do- have another hard drive that I was using prior to clean installing windows, but the one I'm using now was just laying around and still in its packaging.

Thanks for this solution. It was what finally worked to solve my problem, which was the same thing with this variant--I had had a problem with updates on my previous install of win 7. I manged a workaround, but I don't recall what it was. When I attempted win 10 upgrade, it seems to have installed despite the fact that I didn't have all the updates. (It's not supposed to do that--bless you, Microsoft!) It wouldn't even restart, so I had to do a new reinstall of win 7, which wouldn't update. I used your two suggestions, with the internet disc on the first one (it still took two hours to scan for updates) and then ran the second one. The second one gave me an error about not finding the path to the app, so I reconnected the internet. Then it worked. Found 241 new updates. I went to bed and let them load. What's with Microsoft? Why are the updates so slow?
My only question now is whether or not to attempt upgrading to 10.
Any opinion?

I was definitely caught off guard on how long it took to find updates, so me just being an impatient person thought that there was something wrong, but I'm glad that we got your problem solved too! As for upgrading to Windows 10? I personally didn't like it when I upgraded and I went back to the more simple windows 7. What I would do is upgrade to 10, see if you like it, and if you do then awesome! And if you don't you can always just go back to Windows 7 (might be a hassle though)
