So recently I have been thinking about upgrading to a decent processor which I can edit and do some heavy gaming on. I have recently looked into getting the Xeon E3-1231 v3 processor which seems to fit my budget perfectly but im not sure yet. Do you think I should go with this processor. Im also looking to play the new Battlefield which is coming out later on this year so I want to be able to max it out.
Let me know what ye think!

I have one in my server its basically an i7-4770/90 with no iGPU and locked (you can't overclock it). Its a very fast processor that should be good for a very long time, with its hyperthreading it has the ability to act as an 8 core processor in some tasks.

As long as you get a suitably powerful GPU you should have no problem maxing out any game with it.

As a former e3-1230v2, e3-1230v3 and present e3-1231v3 owner I highly recommend this CPU. It probably has one of the highest price/performance ratio.

If you can find a e3-1240v3 for same price as e3-1231v3 go for the first one, it max turbos on all the four cores, not on a single core like e3-1231v3.

Would you recommend it over the 4690K? Also I seen that overclocking makes little to no difference in games such as Battlefield and Crysis about 1-2 FPS difference.

Yeah its faster than the 4690k, and it has hyperthreading which the 4690k lacks. The only advantage the 4690k has is its overclockability, but who cares about that, the Xeon performs better.

And you are correct about overclocking and fps.

I also read that if you have a Z97 board you can push all 4 cores to 3.8Ghz is this true?

''Z97 board you can push all 4 cores to 3.8Ghz is this true? '' if the boards gives you its full turboboost it will just like the rest of intels chips should not be a problem

I cant say fully but will agree with the guy above . for me it was a split between the 1231 and a 4670 thing is the 4670 went on sale and in the cart but I do look back and think I should of gone with the xeon overall ?? I seen a few times where the hyperthreading may of come in to play ?? [hind site is 20/20]

in the end a xeon is like a non k i7 with out igp [ on chip graphics ] look at the compare chart and use it with other chips your interested in as well

Yeah you can get all the cores to 3.8 I have done it on mine under a heavy load. Mine is folding at 50% right now at 3.6 all day long.

Either way .2 ghz makes a minimal difference in performance, I would not worry about that in the grand scheme of things.

So overall out of the i7 and i5 and Xeon the Xeon is the best option to go with?

The i7 and Xeon are the same processor except the Xeon is missing the iGPU and can't be overclocked. I would get whichever is cheaper which is most likely the Xeon

you would think he could see that fro my link above ?? guess not ??

for me if it was for the fact the i5 4670 I run now did not go on sale for 189 I would of got the xeon over it

overclocking and on chip graphics = i7 ''k'' - not overclocking and use a vid card = xeon

if a non k i7 at 300 bucks a xeon 240 bucks go xeon and use the savings toward maybe a better vid card / hardware price point ?

Yes thats the right one.

just to say this non k 4670 does me a excellent job but I do wonder if having the bit extra with a xeon [ 8 threads due to hyperthgreading and the 2mb extra cache at 8w less] how it woul;d of came in to play in some programs I use where it could be a difference ?

like Rogue Leader I think said it maybe just a second or two or a frame or two ? but in the end I don't think you would do wrong choosing the xeon

maybe with it your not wondering ''what if'' like I do at times over the i5 ??

good luck
