After a lot of investigating and trying a few different things out I have finally given in and decided to post here. My computer was working fine this morning (and has been for the past 6 months) but when I went to boot it up this afternoon, it would only boot to a black screen with an underscore in the top left-hand corner. It would not even boot to the BIOS screen.
I have tried unplugging my video card and using the motherboard HDMI port, I have tried swapping the RAM sticks about (i.e. using only 1, different ports, etc) and I have tried resetting theBIOS by both removing the CMOS battery and using the pins. That being said, the first time I removed the battery and plugged it back in again, the computer did boot to windows, but when I proceeded to plug the graphics card in again, it continued to do what it was doing before - now this method no longer works. Any pointers as to what I could do next?
