I have an ASUS Sabertooth X 58 with an I7 960 Processor with 24 GB Corsair ram. I keep getting the BSOD and it is due to the Northbridge Chip overheating. I have replaced the thermal paste with Artic Silver and it did little to help. I have ordered a copper heatsink with a fan but I don't know how to replace the part that is attached to the original northbridge heatsink. For that matter I don't even know what it is called. I also want to replace the "heatsink" that is above the CPU as well but I don't know what that is called either or where I could get a replacement. I have looked in the manual online and see no reference to either. I bought the system in 2011 and have done many upgrades so getting a new motherboard is not a reasonable option. Can anyone help?

Thanks junkeymonkey,
I am replacing the heatsink on the Northbridge chip with one from FrozenCPU.com as you show but the standard heatsink is connected to another heatsink to the left of the CPU and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how I could replace that heatsink. FrozenCPU does have a heatsink that looks like it will be the correct size but I am not sure. I would use that with new tape and cover the chips attached to the board. The motherboard also has a heatsink above the CPU while it is not attached to anything else but it is a different size than the one attached to the northbridge chip. I would like to replace both of those with copper heatsinks but I cannot find any reference to those exact sizes as well as the thickness of the tape that goes on them to cover the chips attached to the board. They will not need a fan, just better heat reduction as well as stand-alone capability.

? my old 590sli board had the heatpipe over the vrm s seemed to do ok ? I guess a downdraft type cpu cooler may help to push air across the board over the tower type ??

[my old board with the heatpipe system]

cpu cooler that can push air down to and across [example]
[from overview]
''Besides voluminous airflow, the included fan delivers 90 degree rotated airflow to avoid heat radiating from the motherboard and cool motherboard chipsets surrounding the CPU socket. ''

I know AMD boards get hot like you say but did not know intels did atleast this z87 don't at all seems nice and cool on the chipsets ??

''I would like to replace both of those with copper heatsinks but I cannot find any reference to those exact sizes as well as the thickness of the tape that goes on them to cover the chips attached to the board''

use to be a lot offered on this but these days so many boards got nice factory sinks on them no one ''MODs'' that anymore like in the old days I guess ??

I googled sabertooth x58 heatsink mods and the google images and looked over pictures that may have somr mods to look at like this guys ??

also thermal pas of correct thickness may do better than paste if the heatsinks are push pin or in a spot where you dont need it drooling all over the place

don't forget some paste may be conductive

don't know if these would fit ??

Thanks junkeymonkey,
As soon as I get my motherboard back from ASUS I am going to put a 40 mm or 50 mm fan right on top of the heatsink itself. I never realized what the hole on top was and I never tried to fit a screw in it to see if it could hold a fan. Now, thanks to you, I have a very good lead in fixing my problem without having to throw a bunch of money at it. I really appreciate it. I would never have thought to look up x 58 mod.

Dear junkeymonkey,
Now I am confused. Was that sarcasm or is there a better solution? I have epilepsy so there are times when my thinking is not great so I want to make sure I am making the best decision. I don't mean to be clueless but if there is a better solution I would prefer it. I have a Corsair water cooler for my CPU, a couple of extra fan cards for my Graphics cards because I have 4 monitors lots of extra fans to cool the system as a whole, I am just having this one issue. I don't have a bunch of money to spend otherwise I would just buy a gaming laptop. Please be straight, what do you believe would be the best solution? I apologize if I am coming off as ungrateful, I am very grateful for your assistance, I just want to make a good decision.
Thank you very much for your time, knowledge and willingness to help.
