I've looked all around the web, and I can't seem to find a single source that knows what M.2 stands for. I understand the specification, that it used to be called NGFF, for "Next-Generation Form Factor", and what it is used for. But in terms of the designation "M.2" that everyone now knows it as, it is a seemingly arbitrary name that I don't know the meaning of. Is it just something so obvious that everyone knows and it just went over my head?

Obviously this is a trivial and non-technical question, but because of my pet peeve of arbitrary and/or non-understood acronyms (I'm looking at you, GNU!), I figured I'd ask you guys before I bow my head in defeat.
