Hi, I have tried to find existing questions and answers for this but can not.

I had the stock Intel cooler on it for a year or more. It did ok but would spike during games so I bought a Noctua nh-u14s. Now it runs very hot. I have taken it off, cleaned cpu and heat sync 3 times with 91% isopropyl alcohol. I have also tried 3 different ways of applying thermal paste and 2 different types of thermal paste. The most current was applying about a half dime size dot in the middle of the cpu. My first 2 attempts I used the thermal paste that came with the Noctua and most currently I went back to Arctic Silver 5 which is what I had on the stock before. Nothing has made much of a difference. My Noctua idle temp is between 65c and 70c. Dare I turn on a high end game and I have seen it around 95c-100c, got concerned and turned the game off. The Intel stock cooler idled around 40c-42c and a game would put it around 73c-78c roughly but with spikes of about 10c or higher occasionally. I am considering returning this Noctua to Newegg if I can not find a fast solution. I know I have easy capability of overclocking but do not and never have on this build. I have no need because it is fast enough...for now. Thank you for trying to help me figure out this problem.

Software:
Windows 10
Measuring temps with; Bios, MSI Command Center, MSI Intel Extreme Tuning, Corsair link 4

Specs:
Haswell i5 4670k 3.4Ghz with Intel turbo to 3.8Ghz. It usually stays between 3.6Ghz and 3.8Ghz

MSI Z87 M-Power (OC genie button on or off makes no difference)

NZXT H630 case. (front push = 1 x 200mm NZXT stock fan and 1 x 120mm NZXT fan on HD cage pointing between the PSU and the GPU, rear pull = 1 x 140mm NZXT stock fan, top pull = 3 x 120mm NZXT fans)

Corsair AX 1200i PSU

Gigabyte windforce 2gb 760 rev 2

8GB Ballistix

Thanks Ecky, you are probably correct! However, I don't know how else to mount it. The Noctua instructions are not great and youtube video's are not helping me. I think the mounting problem for me is when I place the extra large heatsink on top of the processor and screw the two screws with the springs in them to the brackets then I am left with 4 empty/unused holes on the corners closest to the heatsink. The 1150 socket does not have holes to screw it down (or at least I am not seeing them) so I do not know what to do with them. Any ideas what to do with them?

Thanks all for your replies, I really appreciate them! I love this site! I have concluded that the Noctua nh-u14s must be damaged or defective. I watched the video that cbag linked and I installed it correctly, it is wonderfully easy to install. I believe it to be damaged from observing the video cbag linked and the images on this site http://www.overclockers.com/noctua-nh-u14s-heatsink-review/ . I suspected this when FedEx brought the box. The outer packing box (brown cardboard) was all beat up and dented in. The Noctua box looked "ok" but looked like it had been opened before. The bottom of the extra large tower did not have a heatsink cover on it (as you can see in the overclockers link which is a large plastic looking thing). Nor was it anywhere in the box/packing. The tower top had some scratches near the bottom and the pipes that come to the top on the side with the scratches are dented or broke off, not sure how to describe (look as if they were cut off with a tool, maybe that is ok, I don't know) (they are shaped almost like a flat head screwdriver) but they sure did not match the other side which looks like the overclockers or youtube video images which are "a round pointy look." This was not an open box purchase to my knowledge. So...I have decided to return it to Newegg, hopefully a return/refund but I'll try this again if they insist on sending another. I have already reinstalled the Intel stock cooler and idle temps have dropped by 25c-30c, back to around 40c, even fluctuating below (probably from the clean surface and new paste). What a disappointment and a hassle this has been.
