Hey everyone,

I'm having a really unusual problem and I can't seem to find a solution anywhere online. I wouldn't post unless I thought this was a unique issue.

I'll start from the beginning so I'll hopefully have the best chance of diagnosing the issue. So a few days ago my brother attempted to play a prank on me where he he pulled some cables out of my computer, with the intention that I come home, can't start my computer, think it's broken and he gets a good laugh. however after plugging everything back in (he unplugged the mobo, cpu, gpu, hhd and fan power cables, the computer was hibernated before he did this, however he assured me he unplugged it at the wall before doing this so it shouldn't have made a difference), the computer turned on (fans spin, lights come on) but it does not POST (I think that's what it's called).

My first thought was to turn it off and on again a few times, but this brought no luck. So I looked online and quite a few websites suggested reseating hardware (I've practically rebuilt the the pc now), no luck with this either. They also suggested clearing the CMOS, no luck again. Finally I've tried starting the computer with only the essential components connected (cpu, mobo, ram) in case a non essential piece of hardware caused the issue, still no luck.

Finally I thought I'd check the voltage check points with the multimeter. Both the cpu input voltage and ddr memory voltage showed a reading. cpu core0, cpu integrated graphics, cpu ring and cpu sa read zero. This made me think that it could be an issue with the cpu or possibly a faulty psu and the mobo was protecting the cpu? Feeling defeated I thought I'd try again in a few hrs.

Once I tried again after a few hrs the computer started with no issues. At first I thought it was just some kind of glitch however every time I turn the computer off the problem returns (it turns on but does not POST), then if I wait a few hrs and try again it turns on, no problem.

Components:
Mobo: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
CPU: intel i5 4670k
Ram: g skill ripjaws 8 gb
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
PSU: corsair cx600m
ssd & hdd: samsung 250gb & wd 1tb

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help :)

Hmm, I thought the one I had was fairly decent, I tried not to skimp out on the PSU when I built the thing. Although as I said above I thought this could be the problem. Why do you think this is the issue? I'm keen to know. Also which PSU would you recommend?

Okay, great thanks, do you think 600 watts is the correct wattage for my system? Also sorry to be a pain but could you briefly explain why the psu is the likely cause of my issue?

Awesome, at least it's the PSU, which is relatively cheap compared with the rest of the system, I'll order a new PSU and report back once it's installed. Thanks for your help
