Hi, not sure if this is the right category for this.

I'm trying to create a good gaming/multipurpose PC build in the 700-800 euro region.
I've looked at some other threads, but would like some more personal advice, as I've never built a PC before (have a decent bit of experience replacing various bits and bobs, so not scared to mess with computer innards).

Basically, I'd like to have a capable processor (probably an i5?) that can handle basic video-editing, 3d modeling, browsing and of course gaming.

I'd love to have a GTX 970, but price might not allow for it?

I obviously need a wireless or wired network card (preferably both), but I don't really know what components are good. I've done a fair bit of research and I've tried out a few builds via PCPartPicker, but nothing has really worked for me yet.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Just realised I have a 1TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM lying around.
RAM was from a Toshiba laptop, not sure if it will work with a desktop? I'm assuming it will.
Samsung 2x4GB PC3 10600S

Can someone help me scramble up a new parts list with the fact that I don't need a hard drive or RAM or OS? Supplier needs to ship to Ireland, or to France.

Solution
I assume you need an OS too. Video editing will be quite limited, but gaming will be excellent.

i5/GTX 970 is a good idea at this budget and it is affordable if you're not going for an SSD. Something like the above would be good. If you've got more cash it would benefit from a bigger case with better cooling but that one should be fine even with some moderate overclocking. I'd just add a 92mm fan to the back if you're doing that.

I agree with jmsellars1 on this PC the only thing I would recommend additional would to spend a little extra to pick up a hard drive with a few more terabytes. Because after you start to get those video edits saved on to that hard drive it will fill up really fast. I have a few terabyte external hard drives full of edited videos and photos just from dipping a little bit into photography and cinematography.

THanks Bearmann and jmsellars1 for your answers.

Should I wait for the GTX 1080/1070s to be released as the 970 would be discounted, and is there any chance of an OEM 1070 around 300$ in the forseeable future?

The GTX 970 was selling for about $325. I really don't know if it will drop lower than $250. I really doubt you will see a 1070 for $300 in the near future. My bet would be perhaps Thanksgiving 2017.

The only chance of the 1070 being $300 if AMD Releases a better GPU at the $300 price. which is unlikely. Now the 970 may drop a little when the 1070 comes out.

So, what price do you anticipate the cheapest 1070 being? I definitely can't wait until 2017, so I might have to settle with the 970 (which appears to be a good card nonetheless)

Any chance of even 350$? I know that we can't know for sure, but looking at the 970's pricing history, can anyone give me a guesstimate?

Can it do 1080p Ultra/high on decent frame rates? I understand with my budget I'm not going to be doing 4k gaming, but would be nice to know if I can get 1080p.

UPDATE: Just looked at the european prices and it's crazy. 880 euros for Bearmann's build.
After considering this I'm going to have to definitely downsize to a 960/i3 or equivalent since my max budget is 750 to 800 euros. Crazy how much more expensive it is.... :S :/

Oh, you didn't mention you were in Europe. I'll work up a new build for you in a little while.

I hope that a few Euro's over budget won't be a problem. If you end up with a few extra Euro's, move up to the Corsair SPEC-03 case. Keep an eye on GTX 970 pricing. It should begin to fall soon as the 1070 hits the shelves. This build will still be excellent for gaming. Only on a few games will the i3 6100 not be able to keep up with the i5 6500. You may need a dose of patience for video editing, however.

Thanks, that is definitely still a good build but crazy how much more expensive everything is in Europe....

I'll probably wait for the 1070/1080 to come out and then see if prices drop.

Thanks for your help!

One reason it was so much more expensive is because I was taking advantage of local sales on the case, PSU, etc. Not having access to local sales information in Europe makes it impossible for me to replicate a build for a similar price there. That's why it is so important to let us know where you will be buying and in what currency. There is no point in finding you a great deal at Micro Center when you don't have that store there.

I understand, but still am astonished. Us poor europeans.

I just realised that I have 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and an unused Win7 key, so all that can be cut out of the price. Would need room for another hard drive on the motherboard, as 1TB is definitely not enough. Can you rustle up another build with this in mind?

Thanks,

You can't use the RAM. I assume that the additional hard drive is something that you could add later?

If you need it less expensive, you could drop the RAM to 8 GB which won't affect your gaming, but may affect your video processing. If you get a little more money, move up to the Corsair 200R or SPEC 02/03. It's dropped a bit, but keep looking for bargains on the GTX 970. That EVGA SuperSC card is very nice.

Probably would have to drop to 8GB of RAM, but other than that definitely within my price range.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't my RAM work?

Thanks, for helping me out again, has been very informative :)

I don't know if are addressing me or the OP. I only chose wireless because that is what most people want.

The laptop RAM is Sodimm, a different type, and also DDR3 not DDR4.

The reason I chose the H170 D3HP is because it has significantly upgraded sound and a x4 PCIe slot for future expansion as compared to the B150M HD3.
