I have a Gigabyte-GA-78LMT mobo and I havent bought either yet but I am thinking of getting either an amd xfx 8320e or a 6300 because I can get either for 90$ at micro center. So https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ that is my full list. I am wondering if oc would be stable and will it make the life span of my pc shorter? Also will I need an aftermarket cooler? So which do I buy and should I oc???? ty for help

You will always need a better heatsink then the stock fan the CPU gets just too hot overclocking! anything over 75 degrees is too hot for example i have the FX 8320 (Original) and i can easily get 4.00ghz from stock 3.5ghz anything more and it goes 80 degrees wayyy to warm so at the moment i have my maximum overclock which i am satisfied with as it is now a FX 8350 ;-)

Just bear in mind the E versions run at a lower clock speed 3.2ghz i believe AMD sacrificed clock speed to keep power down
the FX 6300 is a great CPU my brother has it and he plays games just fine if you can budge for the FX 8320 please do those extra 2 cores will come in handy in a few years

Look here for comparison and decide whats best for you i believe the 2 cores are worth the money future wise

ok so here's some things:
1. you did not post the metalink. wrong link
2. getting either will give you similar performance. Do yall posters know what phases are? that board has a 4+1 phase and is not good at delivering power. either chip running at 4.3 GHz will run 125w. If you go above that, it will kill your board or give you unstable oc. And comparing to boss sites are unreliable. they use synthetic benches. you actually have to understand them to compare them.
3. yes a hyper 212 evo is good, but a cryorig h7 is better, and h5 is even better for oc.
4. as to how much voltage you put into the CPU when oc, will determine the life.
5. keep the core under 62C, socket under 72C. your oc above is decreasing life of cpu if it passes that
6. games usually use single core more than multicore. Both wll give you similar performance. If you had gone intel, you would have gotten better performance. i3 6100 is better than both.
7. nothing can be futureproof. Both AMD are faildozers and not good at gaming. why did you not choose intel. a least be respectable and wait for zen to at least attempt amd

http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/2014/november/fx-6300_power_to_performance

These guys got to 4.8ghz

http://benchmarkreviews.com/24051/amd-fx-8320e-am3-processor-performance-review/13/

so did these

But they used watercoolers and other different components such as an fx990 chipset. Some people say the chipset isn't any better but that the power phases on the sabertooth for example can handle anything you throw at them.

You will have to take note of the different system configs; plus they are using powerful gpu's to get 1080p max ultra. To overclock you are looking at £100 cooler ; and you should also choose a superior overclocking mobo.

OH like seriously. You can look at a 970 UD3P for 65£ or so and add a good cooler like the noctua coolers. Also cryorig h5 or r1. You do NOT need water cooling for all OC. And with the board stated in OP would get you to 4.2 GHz max on a good air cooler. Also with stock I would not go overclock at all. It does seem you guys are just over reacting to everything. As of chipsets vs phases, that's why I said no 4+1. You need 8+2 phase board. The 990fx boards usually come with 16+4. But really it only needs 8+2. Just come on and reply to what he needs on the OP. no need to start about expensive water cooling or some random over expensive stuff. I personally consider air cooling over water always unless it's extreme OC

I've already been through 3 air coolers on my rig: the arctic a11 was a load of pony and I chopped it up for parts and stuck bits of it to the arctic extreme which is also a load of pony and doesn't even have a flat base it is convex meaning I would have to sand it for hours - they didn't mention it was waff in the sales blurb. Following that I built my own cooling loop:

http://m40i.imgup.net/frankenrad0530.jpg

And I am pleased with the radiator, which is a modded motorcycle transmission cooler, it looks like 'wow' to me & I like the reservoir I made it out of some dvd boxes and the only problem I have with it is the vendor of the pump did not list it's thermal tolerance on the store page at 35c which isn't enough for an overclock so I'm sending it back.

Over-reacting, not really, I'd rather overspec and stay in the green than constantly be pushing on the red. Plus, I could have got a noctua, sure but that's boring. It was time to try water cooling and get down and do something rather than simply read about it, get stuck in and learn the in's and outs of it.

There are problems that you have no choice but to tackle. I have to get things like new olives for my compression fittings and I've ordered a psu to run a peltier & I'm using a copper vessel for a reservoir - I really want to know what effect that will have on the loop.

Some of it is curiosity. Plus versality. Some of the items are dual use. Some of them will migrate to another system in the future Plus I can easily add a gpu block, or 2 or even 3 to my radiator, as I have 7 turns, I can come off the cpu, do a turn in the rad, go off to gpu 1, do a turn in the rad, go off to gpu2, turn in the rad, go off to 3, turn in the rad, and do 2 more turns before going back into the res. and getting chilled off with the pelt.+copper vessel and going back around, and I've done it for £90 quid where your high end coolers are £150.

All you get from that is something that you can plug in with less hassle - but I can repair and replace any component in my loop if needed because it all uses run of the mill plumbers fittings that won't go out of fashion any time soon, readily available in many local shops.

So for me it was more about breaking out of the box.

The 8320e is a slight redesign (for power use) of a standard 8320 which is exactly the same cpu as a 6300 + 1 extra module enabled. So basically, it's the same cpu with 2 extra cores. In anything heavily single threaded, Intel runs circles around amd. It's only in the few games like starwars battlefront or Battlefield 4 which make use of all 8 threads that there will be any difference between the 8320E and the 6300.

As it stands, neither cpu is honestly capable of sustained high (4.7+)oc on that board. With only 4 power phases, at high OC it becomes too unstable simplytoue to v-droop rhythms. The best thermal and power OC is @4.3GHz on either cpu, which is about the limits of realistic stability on that board.

With Zen close, the fx line is about ready to be put out for pasture and retired. It had a quite successful long life, but it's a dead horse and really not worth beating on. If you have no choice but cpu, I'd definitely go for the 8320E, just to not limit options. Other than that I'd ditch amd in favor of skylake

I bought AMD because my last PC was 1156 & there was no upgrade path from the old i3 550 and at least I have got a working PC and a basic platform which still has some upgradeability - I haven't bothered overmuch with HD because at the time it was premium pricey and still is to some extent & I'm counting the days 'til PCI Express is retired and that may be the time that I snaffle a few bargain bin & I think I will be using my WC loop for quite a while yet. I think there is a bit of kick still in the old pony. I have not reached the limits of what my system can do as I'm not spending hundreds of dollars a month on new titles & I can still get an 8 core later on plus I have yet to see if I can attain a 5ghz overclock for which I am waiting on my new pump which should be here before the end of the week .

If you look at what some companies have done with their games franchises in the past very often it they were used to push people on to the next OS; Halo 2 wasn't available on anything less than vista in the early 2000's; the companies were so desperate to turn a quick buck they just screwed over the fans but lost out later on when you could get them for 50p in the game trade in shops. Halo is my favorite bug bear. I don't even know what happened to 3,4 and 5. Went to x box I suppose. & the x box is now slowly dying while the pc lives on.

Ok so if you're buying new you can get the core system skylake cpu mobo & memory for about £220 in the uk but that is only with a sh*t micro atx mobo and there is no overclocking that unless you buy the specially expensive skylake overcloking board from Asrock.

If you buy the fx6300 with a sh*t mobo you are looking at £130. If you go to the fx8300. £160. And if you get the overclocking board. £260.

If you get the overclocking board for the skylake at £170 your intel quote rises to £350

Anyway my copper planter has just arrived it's gorgeous so I'm just going to power down and change my reservoir. £11.99 will get me a bit more cooling power I hope.

Anyway now I'm already in the AMD groove all I have to do is spend £160 on an fx9560 although there is a distinct lack of facts comparing the performance of the two particularly if you try to overclock the amd fx9560 beyond it's 5ghz stock speed

huh. CPU boss is way prejudiced against AMD just because it doesn't have an on chip gpu - but you are always buying a 3rd party gpu any way.

The truth is more like the volatile market is a volatile mess right now - and AMD has yet to come out with it's 14nm CPU's if it's going to play in that ballpark; and they will be offering 14nm gpu's in 6 months.

So what about that. If you do some relative calculating the zen cores are still not as strong as skylake. They're only about as good as broadwell. The i3 6100 plus a half good mATX board is 175$ in us or so. You usually can't OC and don't need to anyways. I would not choose AMD this year. There's not a good point in OC. Just get skylake then,

Just a h110 board and an i3 6100 is about 160£
Board plus i5 6400/6500 is only 240£
No need to oc at all. Plus it is tons more efficient and cooler. And performance will exceed the best AMD CPU right now. Intel is definitely worth it. I get if you're an AMD fan....

Actually I'm not a loyal customer to anything. But the benchmarks of this say the fx 6300 is better value and better performing than the 6100.

If you get an i5 yes well maybe you're getting somewhere

But now I'm in the AMD groove so it's cheaper for me to get a 9560 than it is to get iCPU/mobo/ddr4 memory @2133 - why do that when I can overclock mine to ddr3 2400?

If could achieve a 20% overclock on the fx9560 what's that? 6ghz with no quibbles. I'd like to know what that benches in at. @ddr3 2400.

Wait what so you get a 9590 with a badass cooler for cooling cooling 220w of power. With an OC it will get 250w and what now? The extraneous cost and the power usage and heat will pay up to and be more expensive than Intel over just a few months. You have a freaking air heater in your room during the summer and it will be sor warm u wouldn't like it.its better performing maybe, but if you look at pass mark scores, the 6300is only 1400 or so. 6100 is 2100. Also with four cores it will be better performing in general gaming. Games usually need only four cores and high single core performance. The fx 6300 doesn't have that. Don't ever use sites with sytehtic benches. Intel whips AMDs ass in almost everything excpet for price it is still less powerful cores, but more. You should always choose less but more powerful cores for gaming.

The fx9*** chips are a waste of money & that's coming from a long time fan & amd system builder.

The only 2 amd chips worth buying on a price / performance ratio are the 860k,fx6300, & fx 8320 with an intent to overclocking.

The 6300 can he pushed to 4.3ghz on a cheap 4+1 phase board with a cheap 92mm cooler, the 8320 requires a good 6/8+2 phase board to run reliably at stock let alone overclocking which also requires a decent 120mm cooler.
The 8320e , 95w stock chip though it may be , once pushed to 4ghz will draw exactly the same voltage & tdp as an 8350.

I would still personally take a 6300 over an i3 mainly because of my general disdain for intel as a whole. - that's my personal perogative though.

If you already own that gigabyte board your only real option is the 6300, the board isn't really good enough to run an 8 core chip.

I've already got a badass cooler. Tomorrow I am going to thermally glue a peltier between two heatsinks; an old copper core lga wotsit off a p4, which my copper reservoir is sitting on the top of and underneath I'm going to glue the arctic freezer that has a convex base to the underside so it looks like an hourglass with the copper reservoir on top suspended under my cupboard. It will be cool'n'quiet as it is the copper rez. has taken the water temperature down 2c with no heatsink; playing Mass Effect 2 the cpu did not exceed 37c, av'd at 35 and the water temp stayed at 33c and would climb no higher. My pump is on full speed 100% of the time and it is quieter than the system fans in my pc.

I won't know how badass my frankenbuild is until my new pump and psu for the peltier arrive in a couple of days no less I hope then I am going to start earnestly overclocking. I haven't yet touched the 50-60c thermal margin AMD overdrive says is available to me - and that's without the heatsinks and peltier on the rez.

hee hee. Bad

If you buy the cheaper platform the decider might ultimately be your GPU anyway. What's the difference between 1080p on AMD or Intel? 1080p is 1080p. If you already have a system the overclock is cheaper than the upgrade; The cooler.

Plus there is an opportunity later on to buy the higher end chips when new generations emerge. The price of the 9560 has tumbled drastically; we get to have a go the chance is there if you want to try it. I'm too impatient sometimes to take stock of everything going on in the market; you have to bite sometime if you want a PC. But what about in the winter? I'll save on my central heating.

It's swings or roundabouts If you buy a basic system with cheap sh*t mobo, mem& cpu you could plonk a decent gpu in it and catch up to some extent; getting real facts out of the equation is like getting blood from a stone. Oh of course there's something wrong with the benchmarks if they don't say what I want.

pshh.

Anyway looks like the guy who started the thread has done a runner. scared him off.

The best fx Cpus are the 8370 and 8370e. While identical to an 8320/8350 the 8370 is better binned so stands a slightly higher % chance at achieving a 5.0+ OC. I've seen an 8370 at 5.3GHz, even a 4300 at 5.1GHz, the 8370 on a kraken x60 and the 4100 on a NF-D14. The 9 series cpus are exactly the same cpu as the 8320, they've just been factory over volted and over clocked. Not to mention factory over priced. Absolutely pointless spending out the cash on a 9 series cpu which more than likely has reached the limits of its potential and cannot be further oc'd.

Maybe you're right but it is a little bit intriguing that you're putting me off the scent of a chip that could in fact rival intel's skylakes. Not to mention the simple notion that with enough cooling overclocks of over 8ghz are attainable although that is increasing the difficulty hugely as well.

Anyway; I just found out my indian hammered copper planter is actually aluminium & it's not even plated it's painted a copper color.

I'm going to berkshire to slash the b*st*rds. You're right about one thing though; with the money I've been ripped off while buying ordinary household items to use with my PC to build my loop, I could've built a skylake.

The markets are getting so cretinous you can't even buy a copper pot without someone trying it on.
