Hi all,
I am building a wall mounted gaming pc and i have the GPU mounted underneath the motherboard. I bought 2 x PCIE 16x Extender ribbon ( 25cm each, can't seem to get longer than this...) cables off ebay so that i could join them together and create a 50cm cable to reach the GPU.
However! when I turned the pc on for the first time it said "no signal" on the screen, so i unplugged the GPU and plugged the HDMI into the motherboard and it worked.
Then I tried the GPU directly in the mother board and it worked!
So obviously an issue with the ribbon cable... Plugged one of the cables into the mother board and the GPU and it worked! so i tried the other ribbon cable and that worked!! WTF!

Conclusion: Two ribbon cables in a row don't work. Why not?! Too much voltage drop or interference maybe?

Anyone got an idea how to get around this problem? Ribbon cable needs to be a minimum of 35cm

Your conclusion is correct. There would have to be significant shielding to make it longer. Also did your ribbon come with an capacitors soldered to it? Those are supposed to be there to filter out excess noise on the wires.

Thanks for your comment. No mine don't but I have seen a couple with them on and wandered what they were for.
Do you think wrapping them in foil and then electrical tape will work?

Doubtful, usually wires are sized in width and length to avoid ringing and other behaviors that mess with serial data buses. Aluminum foil would only shield it from the outside, and possibly reflect interference back into the wires.

I would look into a superior cable or a hard riser with traces on a PCB.

Just bumping this post to see if you found a cable which worked and provided you with a good 20in of cable? I have a wall mounted PC and recently got a 1070 and am in the market for a cable for the same purpose as you. (profile pic of my build)

Hi mate,
I sorted it in the end. Turns out the only option is to get a shielded cable from 3M in america. They're £75 and 500mm long
Been using my pc for some time now and it has worked faultlessly.
Hope this is of help

Ah! I just bought a Deepcool one from Newegg for $18. It should come in a few days and I'll post an update on the build quality and performance. If I remember haha
Thank you for responding tho!
