Solution
Any of the i5's can handle a GTX 970 really (top to bottom latest to oldest):
-4690K £180
-4690 £175
-4670K £200
-4670 £175
-4590 £162
-4570 £160
-4460(I own this baby) £140
-4440 £150
-4430 £160

There is a lot to pick from and vary in price with some of the more powerful being cheaper than their older counter parts like my i5 being around £140 now.

I think you mean i7 4790K or i5 '4690K'

You can easily get an cheap Xeon that has not integrated graphics and has hyper threading compared to an overprice i7 4790K. If your overclocking and want the best for your socket yes get the i7 but the only big draw back is the temp that the CPU goes to. The i7 have a rather high TP and so requires a very good cooler to keep the CPU on a leash so to say so it doesn't throttle its self from it's heat. Even with a very good cooler it can go to 70C at mid high usage while using all threads.

Heat is the only issue with the i7 really, that and the price.

i see i would need buy higher ranked cpu for future upgrade than

It comes down to what your going to do with your pc.

If you just want to casually use your pc for web browsing, music listening, Youtube watching and playing generally demanding games such a Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, Skyrim, Dark Souls series and so on then a good hardy Haswell i5 will do totally fine, the Skylake i5's are not very much more powerful than Haswell so I have seen no reason to do a full rip out of my system for Skylake.

If you are going to be doing huge multitasking such as video editing, music editing and or large amounts of rendering then an 8 threaded Intel quad core i7 4790 will be the optimal choice thou you can get the K series if your into overclocking for that little bit of boost. I would recommend you get an after market cooler if you go the i7 route as i7's are known for high temps of 60-70-80C+ at high load.

Hope this helps

I agree and disagree at the same time. If you have an existing DDR3 based system there's no point in going to Skylake. That said, if you were replacing the CPU and motherboard I don't think that justifies staying on old architecture. If you're replacing the heart of the system, you'd honestly be better off going to Skylake and DDR4 since you'll be reinstalling everything anyways.

Its up to the poster really if he wants to go for Skylake or the cheaper Haswell which is still a very strong contender as it can still handle the current gen games and most likely even next gen.

As he did mention in his first post he has been looking at a Z97 chipset board (I have one of these) this may be because it is around their price point.
