Monitor or GPU? Which to upgrade

Hello,
I built my pc (gaming pc) probably four years ago, and have upgraded gradually throughout that time.
However two things I have not upgraded have been my monitor or my graphics card.
I am currently using a very cheap benq monitor, I cannot remember the exact make, however I think it was about £60, it is 1920x1080p TN panel and has done the job for a while. The blacks are a very light grey and text can be hard to read because the screen is quite washed out.

I have been using a GeForce GTX770 graphics card, it has done me pretty proud, however more recently, with games such as the Witcher 3, it struggles to maintain decent fps at highish settings. I really would like to be able to play games such as the Witcher at high.

So, with limited funds for the moment. This is my problem,
Do I spend money on a new graphics card - probably a GTX980, or GTX1070 (depending on release price) Which would be able to push the graphics settings up and play games at smoother fps and better graphics.

Or do I go and buy a new monitor, to improve the look of my current graphics. I would probably be looking at around the £200-£300 price? Probably with an IPS panel.

The other question is; If i do upgrade my monitor first. Is it worth it buying 2560x1440p monitor? Would my current GPU do the resolution justice?

I know this is a big post and a lot to read, but any suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!

Solution
Buy a monitor now, then upgrade the GPU later. Pascal will take a month or so to release, and the GTX 770 is still a very respectable card. By the time you save up for the GPU, Pascal will have decreased in price and will be more affordable.

Your main problem is that generally monitor and GPU go hand in hand. I would recommend buying a 1440p monitor but then you will have to buy a card of the level of 1070 or even 1080.
Personally I would get a monitor first and lower the settings, then I would wait to see what AMD has to offer and once polaris comes out, upgrade the gpu as well, be it amd or nvidia, whichever offers more.

A good 2560x1440 monitor will cost you well over £300.
I would buy the graphics card first. If 1070 performs as we are speculating, prices of current generation gpus are sure to drop. So you may grab yourself a gtx 970 + a monitor with £300.

Ok, thank you for the advice! (This is a reply to both answers)
In terms of monitors, I like the idea of a 1440p, however do you think the resolution will be wasted on the GPU? If not then 1080p, it seems like if I want better colours I should go IPS. and As I am not playing competitive CSGO as much any more, I don't feel the need to go for a super low refresh rate. And would rather have colour quality, especially in dark scenes.
Any suggestions? The asthetics of the monitor itself matter little to me. My price range would probably be up to £300.
I was considering buying a second hand monitor off gumtree, allowing me to get a better monitor for the same price. I just have reservations about reliabilty buying it second hand..
Thanks again
