Greetings,

I am trying to build a computer for my mother for this past mother's day. I believe I have everything connected correctly, but maybe not. The PC powers up fine, but the monitor goes to sleep (or goes into power saving mode) the moment I power up.

I have looked at the sticky surrounding this issue, and have gone over the steps and have eliminated most of these issues (e.g. I have disabled/enabled the GPU, made sure the motherboard is using the standoffs, made sure the CPU is installed correctly)

Note: Two of the four fans run, and the CPU fan runs. Two of the fans of the case/chassis are dormant. Does this indicate where the problem lies?

Solution
ask about an advance exchange where they go ahead and send a new motherboard now, and give you a small window to RMA the dead unit. It would shave a few days off the exchange.

When you say "It powers up fine..." do you mean it POSTs and you're able to get into the BIOS? Can you see any of the boot screen/POST data? Are you utilizing the onboard/built-in GPU? When you say you've enabled/disabled the GPU, are you talking about moving a jumper?

What type of connection/cable are you using to connect to your monitor?

From the sound of it, fans are largely irrelevant for this build, so I would ignore those for the most part.

Hello and thanks for the response,

I am not able to get into the BIOS because the monitor goes to sleep immediately (if there is activity, I cannot see it). The monitor is fine, and I'm able to use it for my main computer.

Disabling the GPU (e.g. removing it completely) should force the motherboard to utilize the default video correct?

I am using HDMI, but I've also used VGA and Display Port without success.

Are you able to provide the make/model of the motherboard?

A lot of mobo's have some form of onboard video capability. If they do, they also have a HDMI/DVI/VGA port on the motherboard itself. It also sounds like you're using, or attempting to use an external video card inserted into one of the expansion slots on the motherboard.

As silly as it sounds, please be sure you're using the correct video port... You should see POST data, if you don't I'd argue your HDMI cable is not in the right location or your motherboard is DOA.

I'm definitely using the motherboard port, as I've removed the GPU completely. I assume that I'd have to be. Should the monitor be going to sleep immediately after turning the computer on?

The motherboard model is: ASUS B150M-PLUS D3

If you haven't tried other cables, such as the VGA or DVI cables, I'd guess you have a dead motherboard.

I've also seen bad cables... and monitors not set to the correct input (though most, if not all, monitors should auto-detect).

You should definitely see the motherboard POST.

Nice motherboard for mom!

I guess I'll have to send the motherboard back. That's very unfortunate, my first custom build goes badly...

Thank you for your assistance.
