So one of my two computers won't connect to the house's wifi, but it will connect with phone hotspots. My other computer, phone, and tablet connect fine with the house wifi. Tried restarting the computer several times, wifi off and back on, disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi; nothing is working. Any help is much appreciated!

Solution
If the computer has previously connected with the router then the compatibility was there.

Did not think to ask about that per se so my thanks to Saga Lout.

The first option is to go into Device Manager and check that the adapter settings match your network. Check advanced settings as well.

The second option is to find the Ralink drivers for your OS and the RT3290 adapter.

Possibly here:

But doublecheck the specifications to be sure.

Avoid 3rd party sites claiming to have the drivers....

Any error codes or messages regarding the failure to connect?

Any known software updates? Or other system configuration changes?

Desktop or laptop?

Are you using a built in motherboard wireless adapter, an external/USB wireless adapter, or an internal PCIx wireless adapter.

Check Device Manager - see what it indicates regarding the adapter.

Try running the network troubleshooter to see what if finds and may or may not be able to fix.

No error messages, only "Limited" when connected to the home wifi.

No major software updates recently either.

It is an HP laptop.

As far as the network adapter, what I see on the device manager page is "Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter" and "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller." Is this what you are referring to?

The network troubleshooter said that it could not identify any issues, not indicating if there were any issues for sure.

It says 802.11bgn, is that what you are looking for? This computer has previously connected to this wifi network, so I have to think it does fit with the router's capability.

Thank you for the link! Unfortunately we backtracked...the computer with the new driver software won't connect to any hotspot now. It just says unable to connect. It still connects to the home wifi with a status of "Limited." Does it have anything to do with the fact that this software is for Windows 10? Both of my computers are on Windows 8.

The "Limited" thing can be caused by an unidentified network. If you see the network map, does that phrase sit in the middle of the screen?

Open an elevated command form and at the prompt, type
netsh winsock reset catalog
then hit Enter. Restart the machine and see if that helped. It's also worth checking in Control, Panel>Internet Options>Connection tab>LAN button that there's a tick in "Automatically detect settings" and no ticks at all in the "Proxy" box below that.

You have to fix this soon - Ralston18 and I might run out of ideas any minute now. :D
