SSD/ HDD disk activity spiking and causing FPS drops and audio crackling?

So as of right now my resource monitor and HD Tune Pro 5.6 looks a little something like this:

I'm not sure if that's normal and my problem is being caused by something else, or if there's something wrong with my hard drive or SSD? Is it possible that I hooked something up wrong to my motherboard?

I also did -just- do a clean install of windows, if that makes any difference. Thanks everyone for your help!

Does this occur when you have the disk monitor off? It seems that is causing a big increase in disk usage.

You can also monitor disk usage with the standard task manager in Windows.

Yes it does. I was playing Overwatch and had Task Manager open on my other screen to watch it, and it would still spike up very frequently.

Hey there, farstruck!

I'd recommend you check the health tab in the diagnostic utility and determine the SMART status of both drives. I'd also advise you to use WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for your secondary WD Blue drive. There are SSD-specific testing tools you could use as well. You might as well check if the SSD's firmware is up-to-date.

Another thing you should try is changing the SATA cables and the SATA ports the drives are connected to, and see if the performance will improve. Just make sure you keep the SSD in the SATA III (6 Gb/s) ports.

Have you also tried updating the drivers for your mobo from the motherboard manufacturer's official website after the clean install of Windows?

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting.

You'd be surprised how robust computer parts actually are. You really can't harm a CPU unless you physically do something to it. If it were overheating that badly then it would just shut off, thermal throttling is just the last measure before immediate shutdown to get the part to cool down.
