Will this Asus board (P5KPL-VM) work with a Xeon E5462?
I know how to do the 771 to 775 but wondered if there would be compatibility issues due to differences in FSB speeds (1600MHz on Xeon but mobo only supports 1333MHz)

Thanks

771 and 775 sockets are physically different and are NOT compatible. Be careful not to buy a incompatible CPU. To find out what's compatible, go to Asus official website, find the board, and there is a tab that says compatible CPUs showing the list of compatible processors!!

They are modifiable and can work as if the 771 CPU was a C2Q:

Thank you, would that mean the clock speed (say a 3GHz CPU) would then run at a reduced clock speed, such as 2.5GHz)?

If it does run at your mobo's FSB yes (not that drastic though). You ought to be able to OC some to get it back were it started though.

Disclaimer though It has been a while since I've touched that platform so I may be mistaken
