This might sound like a dumb question...

But if a game supports multi-threaded rendering, would both processors be used?

Solution
yes if you have dual cpu config it will recognize them as a single CPU. it has the combines cores of the 2 CPUs and will be good in multicore rendering. Though the dual socket thing might cause a bottleneck between the two sometimes. but generally its good. Also games usually do not utilize heavy multicore well, and that's why xeons aren't good gaming cpus. Most games require good single core performance. Few games need all cores and utilize multicore well

Thanks for the answer.

I was looking at these Xeon E5620 and how some people have overclocked them to great success--i7 performance for 20 bucks.

Then I got to thinking... what if we used two of them?

Seems a bit more intensive of a project for my taste though. Would require a server board and I don't think I can overclock on that.

can speak from personal experience. YES. however many games dont use very many threads. Additionally i believe the e5620 is multiplier locked making ocing it much, difficult. all xeons with a x in the tital like x5677s are completely unlocked and can hit 4.4 easy. finding a dual socket mobo that can oc them is also a challenge i believe the only ones that will work is the evga sr-2 and moded supermicro boards
