Help! Very unwisely I put 18 volts through a Seagate WDC WD5000BEVT-22ZAT0 power socket. is there anything I can do to fix it

Solution
Hi there geoffclements,

Is the drive Western Digital or Seagate? Could you post a picture of the device?
We need to know this as there is a chance that the device is hardware encrypted. In that case, you will not be able to access the data if the drive is out of the enclosure.
WD5000BEVT should be WD Blue.

In both cases, your safest bet would be to contact a data recovery company.

I assume that you've hooked it up to a few different machines to see if it recognizes it? Typically if the data itself is corrupted, it'll still come up, you just won't be able to access it. If you can't see that windows is recognizing the drive, I'd say most likely that you fried it.

The 18 volts came from the power supply to a laptop that was connected to the drive by mistake!

OK...
And you've verified that this does not work when plugged in with the right power supply?

As said, it is likely the enclosure is fried.
Have you taken the drive out, and see if it works as an internal drive?

I've tried the drive on the computers I have here with a variety of cables. Have not taken it apart yet. Do you have a link showing what to do to in order to set it up as an internal drive?
Thanks so much for yr help!
