i've read similar problems in this forum but all the suggestions for those havent helped me yet. i have a 2tb external drive that my wife uses for baby pictures (invaluable data) i plugged it into the usb port on my laptop and it said it needed to be formatted before use. i looked at it in disk manag. and it showed raw as the file type. i tried easus and there 'deep scan' found nothing. i was about ready to format it and start over till one day i plugged it in and all my data was there, in NTFS form. i tried to open one of the pictures but it threw up an error saying it could not open MTS format. i closed the explorer folder and when i opened it again it said i needed to initialize the drive. im afraid the controller might be going out. please help. thanks

Unfortunately, if the HDD appears as RAW format in Disk Management, it means that the file system got corrupted.
Indeed, you could try some third-party data recovery tools to retrieve your files at your own risk, however, your best bet on getting most of the files back would be a professional data recovery company.

I'd also advise you to test the drive using its manufacturer's brand-specific HDD diagnostic tool or a third-party alternative and check up on the health and SMART status before proceeding with the data recovery attempts. The testing tools will help you determine the amount of corruption/damage you have on the external drive.

seems like the mbr is corrupted...
u need to either rebuild the mbr...which is a very lengthy and tedious job, and there is no guarantee of success...or u can simply extract the data and format the drive...

this is one of the best softwares out there... http://www.m3datarecovery.com/
but you need to get hold of the full version...

this is a step by step instruction... http://www.m3datarecovery.com/data-recovery/online-help...

the method you should be looking for is..."How to recover deleted or lost partition?"....
it is towards the middle of the instruction page...

once you have recovered the data...do a full format of the drive...
even this software is useful...u can try this for fixing d hdd... http://www.hdsentinel.com/
but again u wud be needing d full version...
