My rig:

Processor: Intel i5 4690 @ 3.50 Ghz
RAM: G Skill Sniper 4x2GB
GPU: ASUS Strix Geforce GTX 970 4 GB
Motherboard: Asus H97-Pro Gamer
PSU: SeaSonic S12II 520W
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB (7200 RPM); Samsung 850 Pro SSD 1 TB
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

I have a 1080p monitor @ 144hz. I've noticed my 970 giving me sudden lags. Even dropping down to 20 FPS while playing games like Division.

If I upgrade to GTX 980 Ti will it be overkill? The price will drop considerably when GTX 1080 is released. I am looking to get it then. What do you guys think?

I also would like to know if the current PSU will be enough for 980 Ti.
Thanks in advance.

You cannot make that claim with any certainty because we have yet to see the benchmarks for the new cards. The only data I have seen did not tell you anything worthwhile as they used an undefined metric "Relative Gaming Performance".

Anyway back to the OP, the GTX 970 should be more than enough for the vast majority of titles at 1080p, if you are seeing a large drop in frame rates I would be inclined to check everything running on your PC to make sure some other program was not syphoning your systems resources.

You could of course...

If you want a good gpu get the 1070 if you cant get a 1080. The gtx 1070 will easily be enough for 1080p gaming and it will easily maintain over 144fps in most games at max settings.

Hope thsi helped.

Honestly, if you're going to upgrade to the 980 ti, just save up the extra money and get the 1080.

Edit: I would upgrade to a better PSU. 600+ watt or even higher if you plan on ever crossfiring/SLI'ing

I don't think I will be going for 4k for the next 3 years. So, if am not able to max out GTX 1080 at 1080p, it's a waste of money, right? I am not going to SLI.

How big a difference is 1070 from 980 Ti?

You could of course get the GTX 980Ti and it would run games at higher FPS but it is probably unecessary. However, if you are intent on getting a more powerful card it is probably best to hold off until the new NVidea cards are released and you see how they are performing.

Sorry for accidentally downvoting your reply to my .__. Anyway, the 1070 is better than the titan x so it is around 25% better than the 980Ti (sorry i dont know the specific values yet) so it is definitely worth the wait, and the money.

Oh sorry here it is: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/05/nvidia-gtx-1080-1070-pascal-specs-pricing-revealed/

The 1070 is around 6.5 TFLOPS whereas the titan x is 7 TFLOPS, but improvments to the architechture can also improve the performance. Also check that your cpu and ram are not bottlenecking your pc.

Thank you all. I think I'll wait for 1070 benchmarks and then decide. Although am leaning towards 980 Ti now because of the price drop that will eventually occur late on. I will check my CPU for the performance issues.

That article is based on the presentation which I watched and I should point out that the article's heading is inaccurate.

The claim was that the GTX 1070 offers better relative gaming performance than the titan X but it never told you what relative gaming performance was. So once again let me say that your claim is unsubstantiated at this moment in time and we need to wait until we see proper benchmarks before we know how much better/worse it will be than current cards.
