I have a Z97-P motherboard and I have 4gb ram installed on it. I was wondering if I could add 8gb ram, I remember reading somewhere that it has to be the same ram amount? correct? or can I add 4gb + 8gb no problem? Would I have to put the ram in different slots, for example 2 and 4 or 1 and 2? Any help is appreciated! thank you

Solution
Yes it would have to skip one slot in between each stick. What is more important is that adding ram is never gauge teed to work unless you try it. Keep in mind you need 2 sticks of ram with the same CL, timings, and speed(not always, it usually downclocks to the lower speed). The best is to get 2 sticks of the same model by the same company with exactly same specs. Though you won't run dual channel well...... Lose the 30% performance increases? Your best bet is to add another 4 GB stick of the same model, or buy 3x4 4gb. Or just well your current one and get 2x8

Honestly it doesn't matter the size, but I recommend you use same size to use dual channel. What you need to keep the same is ram speed changing it might make ram run at the slowest common speed. If you are using onboard graphic then dual channel increase greatly but if you are using gpu then dual channel has slow increase (gaining only 2 fps in games).
