I hope this makes some kind of sense - and someone could advise, please...

I have a AMD Phenom II x4 840 and 8Gb ram (2x4Gb stick 1 is Hynix 128000U 1600MHz, and stick 2 is Elixir 128000 (I think) 1600MHZ.

My question is........is my ram too fast for my cpu or would the cpu downgrade the speed to what it can handle.

The reason I ask is because my system has become unstable in the past couple of weeks or so. And in the research I've done I've found that my cpu can use a max ram speed of 1333MHz.

Thanks

It really depends on the CPU. Some fx 6300(1866supported) have ran 2400 fine. Every CPU is different. So if you have the ram, you can see if it runs stable at 1600, then keep it there. Test with memtest 86. If no errors come up, then you're fine. If there's an error you now would have to go into bios and mess around with speeds and set to 1333 and test again. If it errors then time to reset timings.....
Ram is one of those processes that is just hit or miss when combining . And all ram comes down th Samsung or Hynix ram. You need same timings and speed to combine,
