Solution
Likely heat is the cause of the problem if it is in an enclosure.

When controler chips ect get too hot they tend to Fritz out.
The same is also true for voltage regulator modules if used on the bridge board inside the enclosure if one is used to convert a Sata data interface to a usb interface.

Or a voltage regulator on the circuit board of the drive it`s self.
I do believe there the 2.5" range of external drives, and the case fits the drive very snugly.
Providing some air to cool the outer casing may help the external drive.
If you could wire a 5v or 12v case fan to simply blow air on to it.

Hey there, Russell!

I'm sorry to hear that you encounter such connectivity issues with the WD My Passport drive. Keep in mind that it's not recommended for portable HDDs to be constantly connected to any device whatsoever, though. If you wish to keep your A/V storage device always plugged in and available to you, you should consider getting a desktop external drive which has an additional AC adapter and is suitable to be connected all the time.

You could try changing the USB cable on your portable WD My Passport. However, most external HDDs would spin down either way after 10 minutes of drive inactivity.

Hope this was helpful. Best of luck! :)
