Hello Tom's Hardware Forum,

I would be grateful if you could tell me whether my pre-built HP ENVY Phoenix 860-000nj Desktop PC should be compatible with NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card or not. I should note that this desktop of mine has been running a GTX 980 Ti on a 500W power supply for almost six months now without a single problem. I've added a link with the full specifications below.

Thank you and happy gaming! :)

If that's the original PSU your taking a big risk. HP use low quality units and under those kind of loads it not if it fails it is when it fails, just because it has worked for 6 months does not make it ok. If your going to be spending this much money on GPU's at least make sure you are running them off a decent PSU.

Apart from that the only consideration is making sure any GPU will fit in the case but if a 980Ti fits then a 1080 should fit fine. I see no other issues

The problem with the PSU in HP computers, besides what sizzling mentioned, is that they tend to be oddly shaped as well, making replacement near impossible. A friend of mine decided to try to go from a GTX 940 to a 980ti on his stock HP. He ended up buying a new PSU... and realizing it didn't fit, wired it up so it was a second PSU.

P.S. however, if the GTX 1080 does use less power than the GTX 980 Ti, I see no reason to worry about the power supply. At least not for now. Am I right, or is there more to it?

Thanks.

Edit: I will look for the number and reply back if I'd find it.
