OK...I had someone explain this to me on another forum via PM so there was no one to say 'BS' except me and my knowledge is limited so I am not one to call the guy out.

Here are the specs of what I'm using

Laptop is Lenovo Y50
Series Y50
Item model number 59445072
From Amazon...
Screen Resolution 3840 x 2160
Max Screen Resolution 1920x1080 pixels
Graphics Coprocessor NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M

Basically...the guy is saying that all I have 4k resolution on is the 'chip' in the laptop, since max res on the laptop is 1080 then that's all I get.

What I don't understand is that when I crank it up to 4k and have text @ 100% I get absolutely TINY icons and text to the point that its unreadable. If that is really 1080 then why is everything so small? He says its interpretation of the graphics card.

I guess my question is Am I seeing 4k on the laptop screen? The specs seem to say 'no.'
look at this pic....
https://wkbqpa.bn1304.livefilestore.com/y3mr0qNQUxEMgS_vp_RnSj2ckFVWAk2Vkz9yGNUEvKZTVG-vyz_VO2C-WV-XkwzqlXFfmgThL3eYEsUPeof02dVu4rR4w72A6lvOFyCSvnBW-Yn4NTepaxDohVGpR7aJk03z06SdrFQ6V9PXEqEKQu2QU5lQ2gzm284bt0eTe81B1w?width=3840&height=2160&cropmode=none

Sorry I am on a Mac and am not sure how to imbed etc...hopefully the pic is available

Its a 1080 dimension on the '4k' laptop screen. If the resolution is REALLY 1080 then why does't the pic fill the screen completely? to me, it looks like it should @ 4k e.g. not filling the screen.
Is this just the 4k graphic card and the 1080 monitor working out something reasonable between the 2 of them?
What's the point of the 4k graphics card? Is it only useful if I use HDMI out to an appropriate monitor?
Hope this makes sense...

You have a 4k UHD laptop, this laptop is shipped with and without 4k screen. It sounds like you have the 4k Version.

Screen Resolution 3840 x 2160
Max Screen Resolution 1920x1080 pixels

The specs do not make sense. One contradicts the other, and it certainly does not seem like its talking about max GPU output. Where did you copy/paste these specs from? and how do you know they are for your exact version of the Y50?

I'm guessing specs are copied from here:
http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Gaming-Windows-59445072/dp/B011HNT8QA

Simply there are multiple versions of that laptop with screens:
15.6” UHD (3840x2160), glare, 270 nits, 800:1 contrast ratio
15.6” FHD (1920x1080), anti-glare, 220 nits, 400:1 contrast ratio

If that item model number 59445072 - is correct, then you have UHD screen version.

4K on a 15" screen it will look ridiculously small at 100% scaling. I have a 1920x1080 laptop (15" too) and I have to use 125% to see it nice.
Remember, those resolutions are meant mainly for TV's that are 40"-70" in size!

Oh it does! The resolution is so fine that the mouse cursor cannot be seen, it shows up as a dot, and it is almost impossible to read any text.
Changing the resolution / text size was quite the battle.
